To build my MBTA commuter train I need some Budd RDCs in MBTA paint to go behind the F unit I finished up last week. This is a prototype photo of what I am trying for.
I have been shopping train shows for some time looking for Athearn Budd RDCs. Since the much nicer Proto 1000 models came out, the Athearn ones have been plentyful
And a single unit on the rails looks like this.
I added some seats to hold some passengers.
Then I painted up some passengers. Glued them to a stick to make them easier to handle, primed them with Rustoleum light gray auto primer, and brush painted them from my stash of Floquil lacquer.
Couplers came out low, not unusual for Athearn rolling stock, so I inserted #6 flat washers under the trucks. Then I added passengers to the seats.
And paint a purple stripe thru the windows, decal two gold stripes, decal a T insignia, and put some black wash on the radiator grills.

Those look pretty sharp!
I have three of the Proto 1000 RDCs and I'm debating the purchase of the NWSL re-gearing kit to speed them up. Out of the box they have a top speed of somewhere around 45 to 50 MPH and after the gear change I guess they get up to 70 or so. Closer to prototype speeds.
I just can't justify the outlay for the soon-to-be released Rapido model at a MSRP of $325!
Thanks for sharing the photos!

Rapido has just announced a delivery delay until next Fall for the RDCs, see the ad on the back cover of RMC this month

Nice looking cars you got there dude! The purple stripe reminds me of the colors ACL used on thier passenger equpiment.
David:
The RDC looks great! I have two of the P2K RDCs, one in Canadian Pacific livery and the other in Dominion Atlantic colours. I just ordered a bunch of passengers for them.
I need to do my homework still, but does anybody make an appropriate sound file for them?
Thanks
Dave
I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!
Very nice job David. I only live about a mile away from the MBTA tracks, so these are familiar sites. Also, nice job documenting the progress.

After some delay, we have a second Budd RDC for our MBTA commuter train.
We have passengers in this one. And new windows cut from the clear plastic package of a Danish pastry.
And now we have a two car commuter train. I will have to got shopping or mail ordering for more plastic coach seats before I can do another one.
I biked right by this one earlier today:
This is a "shelf queen" which lives in Bedford, Massachusetts, outside the old freight house. It's been restored and is open for visitors on weekends for no charge. It's on a short section of track barely as long as the unit. It marks the end of the very popular Minuteman Bikeway, one of the most heavily used in the country. The Bikeway follows the old B&M right of way into Cambridge.
It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.
Friends of Bedford Park have a website with some pages about RDC 6211 and its restoration. It is an RDC 2. Some good interior photos I found when I was detailing the interoir of the P1K RDCs for Boothbay Railway Village
