COHS Branchline Sleepers
Posted by 3rdgenmodrr on Wednesday, December 16, 2015 5:20 PM

Hello,

Short of submitting a research request with the C&O Historical Society, I thought I'd ask here first.

I'm looking for info on Branchline Pullman Sleeper kits lettered specially for the Society. They were mentioned in an insert in the May 2004 Magazine (of which I don't have a hard copy).

I've located an 8-1-2, "Valley Forge," at a local swap meet and was wondering what the others were lettered.

Atlas took over the tooling of the brancline series.  If i remember correctly there were a few prebuilt C&O sleepers by Atlas built about 1, 2 years ago.  You might be able to find them on ebay.

They are nice kits, but the trucks were a little loose for my taste.  So I replaced them with the walthers version.

Dale,

I'm a longtime member of the C&O Historical Society and wondered if you were putting together a section of the George?  I have the Valley Forge, but if you want specific Pullman names for modeling, a great reference is the book on the George Washington by Billups that may still be available from COHS.  This compendium has everything on the diifferent heavyweight Pullman configurations used on different sections of the George before 1950.

The society has the correct decals and prototype information to letter your own, if that is what you are after.

Joel

BTW, I have assembled over 10 of the BL kits and run them on 2 sections of the George on my C&O.  They are challenging, but fun kits.

Thanks for your replies, guys. I, myself, just became a member of the COHS this time last year.

In answer to you, Joel, I'm modeling ca. 1946 and Billups' book has been a great source of information.

No offense meant to anyone at all, but my question still stands. I've acquired all the Branchline Pullman kits produced for the larger hobby market (12-1's "Livingston," "Muhlenberg," and "Washington" and 8-1-2's "Potomac," "Vernon," and "Citizen").

In the COHS magazine, Mr. Dixon stated that the Society was going to release three exclusive names for each floor plan (12-1 and 8-1-2). As I said, I've found 8-1-2 "Valley Forge." I'm just curious what the other five were.

Thanks again for your previous replies!

Dale,

Just found the receipt from COHS for the Valley Forge that my wife bought me as a gift back in 2005.  I remember reading about these special runs in one of the newsletters, but it'll be the day hell freezes over before I find that issue.

Tom Dixon is a great resource and he has answered all questions I have submitted to the society, so he is worth a try.

I think a better bet might be Brandy, who works in the front office of the society.  She may have ready access to the information your seeking.  You can reach her at the number for ordering in the Chessieshop website.

Nice to hear of a fellow C&O modeler in the same era.  We are only 3 years apart in our time machines!

I may just have to do that, Joel. Thanks again!

As a last ditch effort, I can say that in his May 2004 editorial, Mr Dixon references the "included insert." So it seems as if that might be the issue to look in if anybody keeps the inserts with their magazines. I have the archive disc that has all the newsletter/magazine issues, but it does not include inserts.

Those are very good prices, Charles. I may have to pick up a few for my 6-1-2-2 project!

Dale,

I found 3 you are asking about from the November 2004 Chessieshop flyer.  BL 12-1 COHS exclusive named Lord Cornwallis (MD-04-395); Marquis Lafayette (MD-04-396); and Spirit of 76 (MD-04-397).
