Locomotive weights

Does anyone know if weights are available that fit into the speaker hole in Atlas engines?

Thanks,

Not seen them from a third party vendor. IIRC, some of the newer locos set up for sound have drop in weights that fill the space where the speaker would go for the DC-non-sound versions, so perhaps Atlas does use them?

If so, then you may be able to turn one up from someone who has installed sound in one and no longer needs the weight.

If you need to wing it, I can recommend tungsten putty, usually available wherever Pinewood Derby kits and parts are sold. This stuff is great because it's very heavy and molds easily to fit, plus it sticks without hurting the finish. I use it for all kinds of weighty needs.

I use #8 bird shot and glue.  The BBs will fit into very small holes, I’ve added as much as 10 ounces to a locomotive with bird shot and several ounces to rolling stock too.  A 25 pound bag goes a long way.

Which loco do you have?  If the loco was produced in a non-sound version, and if the instructions included are typical, they will show parts for both versions.

This GP40-2, http://www.atlasrr.com/pdf/PartsPDFs/HOGP40-2Gold.pdf, is what I mean.  In this case they show a weight set which is item 890511 (or 890513 if you hold the mouse curser over it).  You might call Atlas and see if they have that available for your particular loco.

You'd need pretty large BBs to fit this hole.
