Modeling WW1
Posted by DSchmitt on Tuesday, March 3, 2015 8:44 PM

In Model Railroading Goes to War Bernard Kempinski has a chapter about modeling the military light railways that supplied the front lines.  In the "what scale to model" section of the chapter he suggests 1/76 scale on N gauge track.  His reasons are valid, however if you have the room and money there is another alternative.

Scale Link  http://www.scalelink.co.uk/  offers an extensive line of models in their 1/32 scale/ Grande Guerre line.

60cm Gauge Railway designed to run on Peco 16.5mm track (also available in 18mm gauge for those who lay there own)

 Hunslet 4-6-0T locomotive,

 Pechot Bourdon 0-4-4-0T locomotive,

 Simplex  20hp Tractor (Locomotive),

WDLR Bogle Wagon Type DWD (12 ton drop side gondola),

WDLR Bogle Wagon Type E WD (12 ton dropside well gondola),

WDLR Bogle Wagon Body F WD (12 ton well wagon with stanchlons),

WLDR Bogle Wagon Body H WD (1500 gal tank wagon)

 WLDR Hudson 4 wheel tipper

Vehicles & Artillery

Rolls Royce Armoured Car (2 versions)

Douglas Model R 2.75 hp mototcycle with rider

  Vickers CLYNO motorcycle with sidecar

  Dennis 3ton W. O. Lorry (truck)

  MK X G.S. Wagon

  Pigeon-loft Wagon

  MK 1G.S. Limbered Wagon

  MK IV Male Tank

  Mk IV Female Tank

  60 pdr MK1 Gun

  16 pdr Gun

  18 pdr Gun

  9.45" Trench Mortar

  4.5" British Howitzer

Horse drawn limber for 13 & 18 pounder Guns

They also have figures: British, German, Belgian, French, and American.

The Scale Link website is unatractive and confusing, but while I have never purchased any of their WW 1 models, I have purchased WW2 Resin kits and accessories from them.  I have always recieved prompt service and never had a problem.

In addition there are a number of 1/35 scale tanks (plastic models) available from other sources:

French: FT17 Light Tanks (several varients),

               Schneider CA Heavy Tank

British:  MK IV Male, Rolls Royce Armored Car,

                MK V Hermaphrodite",

                MK IV Female,

                Medium A Whippet Tank ,

                18 pdr Gun

    German:  Strumpanzerwagen A7V heavy tank.

(Germans also used captured British and French Tanks)

                   76 mm Gun

America:  Model  T Fords (also used by British and others)

I probably missed some and there are also a number of suitable Resin models in 1/35 scale.

I tried to sell my two cents worth, but no one would give me a plug nickel for it.

I don't have a leg to stand on.

Yes, may seem an unusual combinations of scale and gauge, but this sort of modeling is a biot differfent on several levels. I really don't do any military RR modeling per se, but keep up with it for potentially overlapping uses with narrowgauge even though I'm in HOn3.

There are two fairly good Yahoo lists that may be of interest. This one is more American/standard gauge oriented: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/militaryrails/

This one is more narrowgauge and focused on foreign RRs at war: https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/narrowmilitaryrail/info

There is some, but very limited overlap in topics and interests between the two groups, so you may want to join one or both depending on your interests.

For another option, Liliput Europe will be bringing out WWI pattern equipment in HOe (HOn30 for we colonists). Here's one discussion and set of links: http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/87702-bachmann-announce-narrow-gauge-range-led-by-baldwin-4-6-0t/

This is the Bachmann-Europe announcement: http://www.bachmann.co.uk/details_archive.php?id=188

Most are 1/72 or 1/76 scale.

However found this company offers a 1/87 scale Mk IV Male and a Whippet in Resin as well as French and German tanks:

George,

It's clear WWII is well-covered by available product. It's too bad that the pickings are far scarcer for WWI vehicles, rolling stock, etc.
