I've been a subscriber since the 70's... my first issue I ever laid my hands on was the August '69 issue. And I agree with much of what Avondaleguy had to say. Particularly with regard to the "checklist"

The layout articles don't seem to be complete. Often they are missing a track plan, or skim over details which make each person's layout unique. One thing which drives me to drink is when the article refers to a "cute unique building in an unusual setting" and nowhere is a picture of that building (or any other special feature mentioned)

Sorry MR guys, but the editing seems sloppier too. Often times the text is contradictory or the text and supporting graphics don't match (for an example, review the post on this discussion list regarding a "misleading MR article"

And the construction articles either gloss over the details, or could be greatly improved by additional construction detail graphics. Refer back to the checklist approach. The innovation is gone as well. One old article which comes to mind was the corner drug store, which presented details of how to cast the many cornices and iron front of the building. Find an artice in MR now that includes such detail and also presents a new technique or material. I used to learn something new every month. Now it is more of the same old, only watered down.

As to the personality, I miss the articles which had four or five railroaders chatting about one thing or another. They made me feel as if I were right there with them. Now I feel like an outsider, the mag has turned so cold.

Enough! Ah well, I am just turning into one of those grumpy old model railroaders I used to laugh at...

-- dj
