I've been subscribing since the mid 1980's and I've sensed the same trend, though without actually measuring the perceived decline. As I have aged, I have become a better reader for sure, but I doubt that fact would totally account for the way in which an issue lasts me only an hour or two today. I remember my high school afternoons being enriched by reading an article or two each day, the issue lasting for a week or more.

I think that one factor is the remarkable sameness of articles, a feeling of de-ja-vu that enables me to skim through entire layout tours and how-to's. It seems like the magazine I started with in the 80's was more avant-garde, with series on the CTC-16 command control (way before DCC) and the C/MRI by Bruce Chubb; I'm no electrician and have never done anything with either of these, but I really appreciated the exposure to challenging and developing technolgy and theory. These days, I could probably craft an MR article by creating a little form with multiple choice for things like benchwork preference, operation scheme, variety of water-soluble glue used to affix the scenery, etc.

The pictures have grown larger, the text has shrunk, and the editors have taken the personality out of the magazine, with the rare exceptions of Koester's indulgences and Bill Henderson's fictions. I would push for more content, less editing, and more pages to carry the admittedly well-done photography.
