Well, I have m bed, my computer, basically everything you would find in a combo bedroom/trainroom.

I have the "whole" basement. I also have the washer, dryer, freezer, hot water heater, furnace, summer furniture, Christmas decorations, work bench, 4 chest of drawers, ... welll you get the idea. I have managed to get the benchwork up for an 11x18 foot layout. It's 58" high so that the exercise machine can be stored under it along with....

Oh well, it beats having the whole layout on piece of paper.[:)][:)]

I am lucky enough to have a 13' x 36' finished room in the basement and a separate work room. Staging goes through the wall into the mechanical room where it wraps around the furnace and re-enters my train room for continuous running. Not a bad set-up.

For me, only the layout and equipment. Now that benchwork is done, all tools and scrap lumber is being removed. The basement is mine, so I don't have to worry about other things taking up space. Some new photos at

Hate to say it, but the layout is going into the corner of an unfinished basement where it will share space with the workshop. Keeping it dust free will be quite a challenge!

My train room is a 38x30 foot room here in the basement. I also have a 25x25 foot office/crew lounge down here. The train room was unfinished when we moved in and although it was plumbed for a bathroom there were no interior walls. I, with the help of friends, framed the walls, insulated all exterior and interior walls, sheetrocked all walls, had bathroom facilities installed, had a drop ceiling and lighting installed, had a work bench built and installed and finally after four years started building the layout. The layout itself is 30x30, I have an L shaped workbench with 16 drawers that have full extension pullout slides, a bathroom with deep laundry sink and my wife's crafts workbench that fills the remaining 8x30 area. The 8x30 foot area has a light colored tiled floor so that any parts dropped from the workbench can easily be found. The aisles in the remainder of the room will have 18"x18" carpet tiles to make standing for long periods tolerable. The outside door to the basement is 3' wide as is the door to the bathroom, all aisles are 3' wide and the bathroom is handicap accessible . Should a wheelchair bound person wi***o see my train room they will be have no problem with access or using the facilities if necessary. I felt getting the layout room the way I wanted it was more important than starting the layout. It also gave time to massage my layout plan to the point that now that I am building the layout I have not deviated from that planned design as work progresses. This is my second layout but my first basement, and it took me all the way to retirement to finally have a basement. My first layout was in the garage and although enjoyable had duckunders and was difficult to keep clean. I am very pleased with the way the whole project is coming along and feel very fortunate to have this kind of space available for my retirement layout. I'm sure this is more than you wanted to know but I think getting the room ready for the railroad is as important as the railroad itself. At least it sure is working for me.

Well, the layout is in our unfinished basement - I put seven 4x8 foam boards atop the rock fill in a raised crawlspace (about shoulder level) that takes up about a third of the space. It has a nice thick concrete retaining wall for the transformers but three 'walls' of pink fuzzy insulation foam instead of real backdrops. I have tools and other supplies on 3 shelves in a freestanding shelf unit, along with a CD player (for playing railroad sounds CDs) and another box of scrap cardboard. I have tacked up the covers from Walther's catalogs on the wall by the stairs.

My train room is approximately 10' x 12' containing a small work bench, file cabinet, and small table. I have 27 Axion car cases full of trains. The closet contains unbuilt kits and some less desirable rolling stock, in addition to track and other odds and ends. I have a preliminary design for an around-the-walls layout for operation by about three people but have not yet started on it. I get to run my trains on a club layout. I also have 2 sets of collectible prints on the walls, in addition to other neat railroad pictures.

Right now, it's just the workbench, a couple of plastic tubs of train cars, and a loop of old snaptrack where the 3-year-old can watch trains go in a circle.[:I] I'm actually getting ready to actually lay that snaptrack down on about a 4x4 board so I can take down/put up easily (plus hopefully improve the tracking of the trains- right now, the slightest bump can lead to derailments, of course.)

Mid-term plan is to add some simple scenery to said board- ballast, simple roads, cheapie buildings- things that the little boy can "help" with. (I say "help"- my wife introduced me to a Chinese phrase, pronounced "bahn dao mahn", which loosely translates as someone who is willing to help, but will vastly complicate any project... [:D]). For example, I'm sure he'll be GLAD to help out with the "wet water" spray bottle, the problem will be limiting it to only a 2'x2' area.... I figure that this way, I can also try out some techniques (like homasote roadbed, foamboard insulation scenery, and maybe DCC) that I didn't know about 20 years ago when I last had an actual layout.

Long-term is to take an 8'x13' area of the family room (building permits already secured from the Spousal Overunit...) and build a walk-in layout. I'm already working on plans, on the idea that if I've got parts of the plan I can build alone (like the yard or downtown), I can start that before El Destructo (the afore-mentioned 3-year-old) is old-enough to enjoy.

whats in my train room (26x14) 2 words MASS CHAOS. about 8 milk crates of train magazines, 4 BIG boxes of built structures,6 big plastic totes of train cars and loco's, 4 medium boxes of scenery materials, Lumber, lumber and more lumber. Drywall, drywall and more drywall. Bought our house a year ago and have been working on finishing off my train room in the basement. I have all the stuff for when i get it done, time hasnt been on my side. :-(

Lets see, my ww2 re-enacting gear, german radios and phones, guns and ammo, 25 years of back issues of MR, my work shop that will hopefully be cranking out some rolling stock soon, lumber and drywall i'm stockpiling for the layout construction , and a BIG hairy spider......ick! (i'm sure there is more than one, but i try not to think about it)

My layout, a lot of railroad relics from the local area (mainly Rock Island) and some prints from a local railroad artist that were dedicated to me when my grandpa passsed away.

My room is approximately 20' x 20' on our lower level. I had it completely finished when we built our house this year. I have moved all of the extra furniture out (The room served as the holding pen during our move in).

I have finally unpacked 40 plus years of kits and accumulated "stuff" and catalogued it all. I was surprised as it took over 18 hrs to get it all in the computer. Now I am ready to start...... My plan is coming along with the help of 3rd Planit but construction is on hold as I am off to straighten out the mess in Iraq.

Now if I can keep from losing my head and not showing up on the 6 o'clock news I will be a happy camper. In the interim, I will fine tune my plan and be ready to hit the ground running when I return.... That is if someone doesn't start storing "stuff" in this nice large, well lit and carpeted hideaway!

Mine has my layout and train things. A full size pinball machine. 2 tv's vcr's and dvd setups for train videos. My bowling balls. A computer setup and the burglar alarm.

Mine has my layout and a wall unit full of "stuff". My workbench currently holds my collection of railroading hats. Right now I'm trying to decide on the best way to display the hats. I'm leaning towards a shelf with a plexi front and top to keep the dust off.

My trainroom is a 10x13 FT. metal storage building set on a 2FT. stemwall
it doubles as my prayer room.
Its insulated has a workbench, and bookshelves, with train books, welding books,
train pictures, airplane pictures, and tools.

photos of the kids, FRED and it's work desk, I use an old table for work desk, a tv, the filing cabinet (a series of milk crates stacked up), Canadian Navy awards, diplomas, some of my wife's things, her name is Gloria, she is very supportive of this endevour so we share. And of course the TABLE.

Oh! you wander who FRED is? FRED is the computer, F is ..... you'll figure something out, I'm sure, R .. ridiculous, E .. electronic, D .. device.

well, the layout. countless miles of wire scattered about the floor, my bed, a TV, surround sound[^] several filing cabinets full of trains 6 or 7 tons of plaster and other scenery materials, a huge bag of trash, a big box of roadbed, piles of track and turnouts, OUCH... a fork... a pair of shoes, and this very computer... and to think i work under these conditions.[D)]

My train room is my bedroom, albeit no layout, just trains sitting in boxes. Plus, a tool box, and large stack of magazines. Nothing very interesting.

I should add a poster, calender, something.

Mine has ALL the train stuff in it along with some of the magazines I've collected over the years, photos, memorabilia, calenders and of course the layout (in work). It all fits into a nice 18 x 22 foot room over the garage and it's mine, all mine! Beats the 12 x 20 ft room in the last house that was overwelmed by everything I had stored in it. When we moved I unpacked a box at a time so I wouldn't be tempted to get it all out and mess around with it in the room, cluttering it up and not letting me get started on the layout.

I started wtih a paper outline of a basic track plan on the floor, built the tables, and then started opening one box at a time to control myself and keep on task. It worked for the most part; now I'm experimenting with all the cars and engines to see how it looks as I make progress.
