There were Diesel-hydraulics in Europe that used a mechanical transmission to power the wheels, but all but a few experimental units on the SP and Rio Grande in the USA have been "diesel electrics" or just diesels. They don't power the wheels directly from their engines with shafts, but have the engine drive a generator that makes electricity, which powers electric motors in the trucks, which power the wheels.
