Scratch building a brass locomotive
Posted by SOU_RY_modeler on Tuesday, July 29, 2014 11:54 AM
I have been buying old model railroader magazines at train shows and I found the ones from November 1997-May 1998 with articles on scratch building a 4-6-0 but I don't know where to find the 61' drivers, the valve gear rivets, the leading truck wheels, and some other parts. Does anyone have an idea where I could find these parts fairly cheap?

Not off hand.  Try the big Walther's catalog, try magazine advertisements, try Google, try some train shows, you might find a junker steam locomotive with the right size drivers and other parts.  Valve gear rivets ought to be around, made for other purposes. Try googling on just plain rivet, or "rivet 1/16 inch"

Try Precision Scale.  They should have most, if not all, of what you need.

I remember that 4-6-0.  I saw it in person shortly after the articles came out.  Nice loco, but it had one of the worst paint jobs that I've ever seen.  Well, that and the NC&StL F's a few years later....

Bowser still lists some steam loco parts, including 62 inch drivers, a rivet tool, and I think I saw some rivets.  Here is a link to those items: http://www.bowser-trains.com/docs/Prices/Bowser%20HO%20N%20Prices.htm
