Cold War relic: Anyone model the White Train?
Posted by JDL56 on Monday, April 21, 2014 8:12 PM

I lived in Texas in the mid-80s. While there, I developed an interest in the White Train, which carried nuclear weapons during the Cold War from the Pantex plant in Amarillo to weapon storage facilities across the U.S. The White Train ceased operation in 1987; I've posted some info and photos about it on my blog at http://cprailmmsub.blogspot.ca/2014/04/cold-war-relic-white-train.html

Anyone out there model the White Train?

John,

I don't model the White Train, although it does make a fascinating subject. I do have a mythical Atomic Energy Commission complex on my layout, the penultimate stop in a supply chain for fissile material production similar to Rocky Flats. Here's the main gate.

Transport elsewhere of the "end product" is a bit less dramatic than from Pantex, generally just a discrete L&N baggage car accompanied by a Pullman for the support and security party.

The nuke train?  Nope.  But I do have a friend who is modeling the first "White Train"...the 1891-era New York & New England RR's "New England Limited".  Smile  It was a very exclusive 1st class train, and each passenger car had white sides and ends with gold leaf lettering.  The train crew wore white overalls, hats, and jackets, and they even whitewashed the coal in the tender.

Sorry for the thread drift here, but when I saw the topic header, I just had to chime in...
