I knew these folks for 30years , just a small family business. My layouts are made mostly from stuff I got there. They were like the small town barber shop . a place to go and B.S. trade ideas with other Model railroaders, yep no big deal.

I went there on a montly basis in the early 90s. It was my "go-to" place when I got back into the hobby. Sorry to hear that it's gone now.

Unfortunately it is a big deal as you can't BS on the phone when mail ordering, you can't BS on ebay and it's like a Barber shop. A place to congregate and solve the MR World problems. It's also a place to run too when you just realized you need the little things NOW!

Actually I learned years ago to add such things I was low on to my order--that's mail order-since at that time the closest hobby shop was just over a hour's drive.When I did go it would average around 70-$80.00-that's 1980 dollars.
I do the same today..No need to make a 52 mile round trip for a bottle of paint or whatever I just add it to my on line order..

I agree it really is a big deal , my "yep no big deal " was a sarcastic reply . Just hanging around a good LHS and talking with other model railroaders if nothing else is really fun and as said next time i need some small item for the building I am scratchbuilding , where do I go , the closest hobby shop that carries scratch building supplies is 2 hours away , each way.
Mokenarr: Have you tried An Affair with Trains in North Phoenix? We just visited them last weekend. Pretty good sized store.

Been to Affair with Trains , nice shop and nice people and they have lots of stuff , I do both N scale and HO and they are well stocked in both . Only problem they told me the don't carry scratch building supplies cause not enough people buy them. And its aways away from Mesa though its worth the trip.
Yep, been to both. Went to Roy's the first time a few months back and really enjoyed it, and as mentioned, they carried scratch supplies which I bought some, along with other knick-knacks that have really made the last few months hobby time fun for me and taken me to a different level.
I looked forward to my next visit to them. They were about 3 1/2 hours from me; An Affair With Trains being 4+ hours away. Sorry to see them go. I will miss them!

Duane sounds like you are travelling from the south somewhere , have you ever been to the Ace Hardware on 22nd Street in Tucson. Tucked in the side of the place is one really nice train shop, complete with scratch building suppies. My daughter lives by Tucson and when I visit there this shop is a must go to place. And the sales foks love to talk trains.

Isn't that something. Pretty unusual to find a model railroad section in a hardware store.
Here in Illinois, in LaSalle, there is a whole section of a drug store, devoted to model railroading.

Mokennar, no to both. I haven't been to that shop and am traveling from "the north"- east in reality (Springerville/Eagar). A "quick" jaunt to Show Low, down to Payson and down the Beeline landed me in Mesa. A not so quick jaunt off Beeline to 101 and around to Deer Valley would get me to AAWT. I haven't looked into places like Gallup, Grants or Albuquerque NM which are closer because I hardly ever go that way. I hae heard of the Tucson shop though!
