Boxcar roof paint job
Posted by HO-Velo on Friday, November 29, 2013 11:11 PM

Recently made a web purchase of a new in the box Athearn CN 50' PD Superior boxcar.  Wondering if the border (same color as the car body) around the alum. colored roof is proper or a sloppy factory paint job?  The prototype photos I've found on the web don't show enough of the roof to tell.

Thanks and regards,  Peter

The model is supposed to depict prototype overspray on the galvanized roof.  So it's done intentionally.  Personally, I think it's a bit too "neat" and uniform of an "overspray", I believe real overspray would have a more erratic look to it, myself.  Unless, of course, the prototype was robotically painted.

Brad,

Thanks for the info., I'd have never guessed the border is supposed to simulate overspray.  I applaud Athearns attention to detail, but agree that the "overspray" just doesn't look right.  Of course nothing that some masking tape, alum. color paint and an airbrush can't fix.

regards, Peter
