3-Axle Pick-ups
Posted by RicZ on Wednesday, October 2, 2013 6:19 PM

Bowser recently announced their 3-axle pick-ups for their Baldwin diesels.  Do you think these might fit the Atlas RSD-4/5 trucks, giving them more connectivity through insulated turnouts?  The current Atlas trucks use only a 2-axle pick-ups, shortening the truck's connectivity.

I assume that Baldwin was using the same/similar truck to ALCO in the 50's.

Depends on  if the axle spacing for the hard metal part is the same. I've heard that people home brewed their own, but that Bowser now is offering the same ready made. Shouldn't be too hard to cobble up if you can solder if the Bowser doesn't fit the Atlas.

Thanks, looks like I'll have to invest in a set to see.

I rolled my own way back when. This works well on both the Bowser and Atlas units.

Cut a small slice of brass tubing that fits snugly over the axle tip, but still spins freely and solder a fine wire to the edge of it ....

Slip the tube over the dead axle and solder the free end of the wire to the top edge of the front buss bar ....

The back of the side-frame itself needs a slight modification - you can see there is a raised boss where the third axle mounts. This mount needs to be shaved down flush to allow room for the brass ring and still allow the axle to have some lateral movement ....
