Been busy as of late. I did finally get those rapido cars I mentioned earlier. They are really nice and work pretty good out of the box. I need to get some more kadee #5s to stick in 2 of them. The junk couplers already started breaking. I also need to pick up a decent F40PH. I'd prefer a Kato or even a Kobo if I could find one.

Ha-vent been in as I had some business to attend to on the phone, was on it pretty much all day. Right now we are under a severe t-storm watch and things look like they will be getting very hectic in the next few hours. Temps is going to drop from 86 to 60 in only a matter of hours. We have had alot of rain this year but not any decent storms. I don't want the rain Toronto got the other day, only two days and I will be in Toronto for the INDYCAR race.

Well, 2 Xrays later and some different pain killers to see what is what with the hip...The DR also wants to check the Arthritis levels and locations there too via pictures...so took the Xrays.
RE my right hand: gonna get a electrical nerve transferance test done the 23rd. That will tell us how much impulse is getting thorough. WHen I was about age 7, I broke shattered and dislocated an elbow. NOw I am racking my brains as I though it was the left one i broke, but could have been the right one, the one giving me troubles now. so it coud be coming back to haunt me.
Dinner was roasted chuck roast, cauliflower, zucchini, yellow squash and caesared noodles.
Tomorrow is another day.

Well the weather guessers were off a bit as our storms were little more then some heavy rain and a little bit of thunder and lighting for a few minutes. The clouds did indeed look quite ominous though, and it did look like we were in for a doozy but it didn't amount to much.
I have reported the error.
Nothing happened today except a trip to town with my father. First to Market Basket, then the bank then to Wal-Mart where I picked up some sandwich fixings and a loaf of Texas Garlic Toast. An order of some stick-on rubber feet that were made to be used on computer cases came in today and I wasted no time in applying some to the bottoms of the assorted disk drives of my IIe and the Quentin disk drives that were provided by my neighbors father. My van backfired through the exhaust this morning and scared one of the neighborhood dogs so badly the poor thing ran into a fence post and a tree.

Got work done on the Mitchell today, and will be getting work done on the B-17G again tomorrow. The paint on it should be dry by then, so I think that I can get some of the detail paint on it tomorrow evening, along with the tail gunner and engine cowlings.

Had my appt. with the Dermatologist this afternoon. She is my favorite doctor of all times! Not only is she cute as can be (little pettite lady), has great bedside manner, but she actually gave me the following orders I am supposed to follow... She came in the room and looked at my arms and remarked I had an excellent color tan on them. She then said they are the color she wants me to have on my legs and upper body as well. So on sunny days, I am to put on a pair of shorts, take off my shirt, and go out into my back yard and just sit around in the sun for 10 to 15 minutes until the rest of me looks like my arms! What a great prescription...
On the way home, I tried to find the old shoe store in Canandaigua I used to go to when I was a kid. Last I knew it was still in business, but couldn't find it. Traffic was heavy and downtown is completely torn up for some changes on Main St. Got home and called my sister who assured me the store is still in business and in the same place which is on the other side of the street from where I remember it. I have to drive up to Canandaigua for a meeting tomorrow so i shall go shoe shopping then. Need to get some shoes that will fit my feet properly and since the only great shoe store here in town got driven out of business by Mall Wart a couple years ago, I guess I'll go back to buying them in the store I got all my shoes in when I was a kid.
I also stopped and bought the stone blocks on my way home. Got a dozen of them just guessing how many I would need. Ends up I can use about 5 more so I'll get them on the way home tomorrow. I did manage to get the NMRA Division newsletter folded and ready to mail out to those who require snail mail. They will get mailed tomorrow morning.
Manét has been coughing (working on a hairball I think) so I had to trick him into letting me put the hairball medicine on his front paws. He is now mad at me.... Blackie will eat it of my finger, but Manét won't touch it so gets it on his paw. He then runs away shaking his paw hoping to get rid of it. Finally he licks it off. I just went in the bedroom where he is now on the bed. He looked at me very angrily and said, and I quote, "MEEEOW!!!!"

Not much happened today. Just a quick shopping trip with my father this morning. This afternoon my Apple IIe computer and it's disk drives got their rubber feet. Many of the original feet were missing do I removed the remaining ones before applying the new ones. Now all the feet are the same size and nothing is sitting cockeyed. Hopefully tomorrow or Friday the new power supply for my mothers old IIe will come in and I can install it. The one in it works but makes a clicking sound like a stove burner heating up. Something in there is getting hot.I may get some layout work done this week. Problem is I don't really feel like working on it. I think it's time to step back and take a break from it for a while.Time for me to call it a night. See y'all tomorrow.

Don't be ungrateful when you receive straight talk or a gift
Origin-the short version:
When you get information straight from the horse's mouth, it means you are suppose to be getting honest, correct, truthful information. The phrase comes from the old days when determining how old a horse was was done by looking at its teeth. So, before betting on a horse, people would check its teeth to see how old this horse was. Therefore, anyone who worked around the horse or reviewed it knew how old the horse was and could let the others know. Therefore, the information was acquired, 'straight from the horse's mouth' and not the owner of the horse.
On the other hand, if someone gave you a horse for free, it was considered rude to look in its mouth and check to see how old it was. Therefore, you were not to "look a gift horse in the mouth." Today, this means not to question the quality or motive a gift you get from someone.
the longer in depth version:
Proverbs are 'short and expressive sayings, in common use, which are recognized as conveying some accepted truth or useful advice'. This example, also often expressed as 'never look a gift horse in the mouth', is as pertinent today as it ever was.
As horses develop they grow more teeth and their existing teeth begin to change shape and project further forward. Determining a horse's age from its teeth is a specialist task, but it can be done. This incidentally is also the source of another teeth/age related phrase -long in the tooth.
As with most proverbs the origin is ancient and unknown. We have some clues with this one however. The phrase appears in print in English in 1546, as "don't look a given horse in the mouth", in John Heywood's A dialogue conteinyng the nomber in effect of all the prouerbes in the Englishe tongue, where he gives it as:
"No man ought to looke a geuen hors in the mouth."
It is probable that Heywood obtained the phrase from a Latin text of St. Jerome, The Letter to the Ephesians, circa AD 400, which conatins the text 'Noli equi dentes inspicere donati' (Never inspect the teeth of a given horse). Where St Jerome got it from we aren't eve likely to know.
Heywood is an interesting character in the development of English. He was employed at the courts of Henry VIII and Mary I as a singer, musician, and playwright. His Proverbs is a comprehensive collection of those sayings known at the time and includes many that are still with us:
- Many hands make light work - Rome wasn't built in a day - A good beginning makes a good ending
and so on. These were expressed in the literary language of the day, as in "would yee both eat your cake, and have your cake?", but the modern versions are their obvious descendents.
We can't attribute these to Heywood himself; he collected them from the literary works of the day and from common parlance. He can certainly be given the credit for introducing many proverbs to a wide and continuing audience, including one that Shakespeare later borrowed -All's well that ends well

Jeffrey- Can’t say I’m glad to hear about the foot. But with as much trouble as it causes especially with the infections and all is seems more of a danger than anything. I never asked for obvious reasons, why they never suggested removal, but after you explained the medicare part I thought, now gee isn’t that ridiculous. It could conceivably cost more to keep it and you healthy in the long run than to remove. I guess we better be careful about that, next thing they’ll figure amputation is cheaper and start lobbing off limbs for cuts and scratches.

Welp, busier than usual last nght of course. Way busier. LUCKILY, a little before 5 my buddy’s daughter shows up. Says she’s gonna help me. Boy howdy am I ever glad she did. I never would have made it. As it was we just buzzed through it. Never stopped, but things went fine. She has three little kids and her husband wo*ks a swing shift so usually she isn’t available other than her normal Fri and Sat nights without advanced arrangements unless your lucky, but I guess tonight she was available and just decided to help me out. Like I said I’m suuuure glad she did.
Gotta move some appliances out for flooring this morn between 7 and 7:30 so….gotta run.

I've been working on the tannery on my layout, and doing some research on the process. In so doing, I've finally got an excuse for something I've always wanted - a covered hopper. Tanneries use salt, so that's what will be delivered. I found an undecorated kit from Bowser and ordered it yesterday. They also use acid, so I found a Hooker chemical tanker, another "always wanted one of those" cars, on eBay. I just upgraded the wheels and couplers (horn hooks!) yesterday.
It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.

Last night was the 3rd evening of 5 this week for taking grandkids to church VBS. As I said we are volunteering our time to help with the program. Actually, it is very rewarding to to us for doing that. It's fun being with the kids. One boy was wearing a U of Michigan T-shirt, and I told him Shelley and I moved to KY from Ann Arbor Mi and had attended some U of M football games. He thought that was "cool". ... I spent a little time entertaining the youngest kids (5 and under), and had them laughing. Of course, the Christian message is the main purpose, and it is being presented to the kids very well.
Mr. B. ..... Your tannery sounds like a very interesting project. It's good to hear about your research. I'm looking forward to progress reports.
Jeff .... You have been such an inspiration because in spite of serious health issues, you have continued doing things for your self and for other people. You tell us about your health issues, but it never sounds like you are a complainer. We're here as your friends who care about you. Currently it is 68 with an expected high of 93 under partly cloudy skies, giving way to partly sunny skies later this afternoon. (what is the difference)
W**k today. My knee feels better, so I should not have to wear the brace.
Got two loads of laundry done, some vacuuming, sprayed for ants, the feeder wires installed, and some scenery work done yesterday. Did not get to work on any building kits, but feel like accomplished quite a bit. Will not get much railroading w**k done tonight, as it is Skype night with my son.

I know that feeling, Jeffrey. When I decided to tear down my small layout to make it bigger, I got frustrated as there really WASN'T room for the expansion! THEN I 'got off" the idea of the layout totally. And wanted nothing to do with it. Then the money got tight, and with zero hobby budget, it worked even further out of my liking.
Then I had a "train fix" with the christmas tree layout, small, but i could at least run trains.

I have already done several errands, mailed the newsletters, went to the Credit Union, and stopped in to get my allergy shot. Got a call from camp this morning about a mic not working in the dining room.... I tried calling the camp office and keep getting the machine instead of a human. the guy who oversees the sound system out (used to work for and has considerable experience doing sound for a couple of schools) left me his cell number but the last 4 digits appear to be "gkshk natrkj, fosuk. glopfink".
have a meeting of several of primary committee people for our 50th class reunion at the restaurant we will be using for the main event this afternoon. Then I hope to get to the shoe store and on the way home pick up the rest of the stone blocks I need.

With coal prices up A wild cat coal company leased the old Los Crick Mine on the I&S...Good news for the I&S..The first 2 loads of coal came off the branch this morning...With extra trains old Alco had to be put back in service and the old # 1 Illinois Central wooden boober caboose had to taken from display at city park and pressed back into service too...

Afternoon all,
What a difference in the weather here today compared to the last few. Today is 73 with low humidity. This is right up my alley and could stay like this all year round. On the other hand, the previous couple of days can only be described as hot and steamy with lots of rain. Lots and lots of rain. All the creeks and streams around here flooded yesterday in a dramatic fashion. Flash floods closed many roads and many communities have been declared disaster areas. There was one confirmed tornado yesterday, with a couple more suspected in western Pennsylvania. My neighborhood escaped the worst of the storms as they went either north or south of us. There was a large old tree fell onto a house about 2 blocks away last night due to the high winds.
I finally got down the basement today and cleaned the track on my little 4' x 4' test oval so I could try out my Intermountain PRR Heritage Unit. Looks great and I like the lighting on the headlights and ditch lights. At first, I was a little disappointed at its performance, but after about 15 minutes of continuous running I saw some improvement. After dinner tonight I will give it a lot more run time and see what happens.
The mail came today and I got a Jury Summons for Common Pleas Court. I need to fill out the questionnaire and return it, but I won't know until August 13th if I have been actually summoned. I thought a person was exempt at age 70, but it's age 75. I don't really have a medical condition that would warrant an excusal, but like a lot of others guys my age, I hope there are frequent breaks and a restroom nearby,
I was doing pretty good as far as my back was concerned, but it was very sore when I got up this morning. Must have done something while I was asleep. Ran out of the muscle relaxer they gave me at the ER, and I had to stop taking the pain medication they gave me after 2 or 3 doses. It really tore my stomach up. So I have been taking Advill instead. It seems to help but I don't like taking a lot of that type of medication. I have an appointment with my PCP next week, and I'm hoping things are greatly improved by then so I don't have to return to physical therapy. Not that it's a big deal, and it has helped quite a bit in the past, but I just don't like it.
The wife surprised me earlier. She suggested we go railfanning tonight after dinner. Of course, she also suggested we stop on the way, which it really isn't, at this ice cream stand for milkshakes. Okay, she may be a little devious here, but if I can do a little train watching I'll go along with her.
By the way Todd, at least I think it was you, are you aware that this is the last season for Ziva on NCIS. Saw it on the internet news last night. She's leaving at her request apparently.

I generated 2 grocery bags of solid paper recycling and 2 bags of shredded paper recycling whittling down piles of paper producta and "important papers".
. FOund some old "how to" books from MR that I didn't realize I had, and probably don't need, but kept anyway.
that about sums up my day thus far. MOH is working today {finally} and apparently has s full day of it as is not home yet. It is almost 3:30 pm and hasn't been home yet.
Paid the cable bill, the only bill besides AARP begging for money...after all "many seniors are one meal away from poverty" WEll, La ti da! GUESS who else is about one meal away? ANd who doosn't have extra money just lying around just to donate to AARP to "HELP" ??? hate that.
Well, dinner will be BBQ dead pig, coleslaw, and noodles.

I'm working on one of my Franklin disk drives today. It has a slight tracking problem and when you're working with16 sectors per track on 35 tracks (360k) you want to be as precise as possible. The adjustment is simple enough but must be done very carefully and the outer shell of the drive must be removed to do this. The drives are second generation Apple II compatibles and are nearly all metal in construction so are quite heavy. Feels like somewhere between six and eight pounds. You'd have no problem busting a windshield with one of these things. Now it's adjusted and working perfectly.The little blue square with the white dot is the piece I to turn to make the adjustment.
