Afternoon all,,,, been awhile, just thought I’d stop by for a barely pop. Cloudy n damp out, at least it’s not raining at the moment. Weather guessers are saying, we bout 14”ahead of average already.
Things been kinda quite round here I guess now that baseball is over. We only have the 17 grandson living with us now, but all the others still round on a regular basis. Of course football starts before long and with all the practice, camps n such, it’ll get busy. We got 2 grandsons and 2 nephews playing here
Hey TODD,,,, we’re going to be in Springfield for 4 days next week, for the Legion convention. Might try n hook up one day, if there’s time. I haven’t told Mother yet, but I hopin to make a stop by your LHS.
As for trains, the tracks out back are busy lately, but we haven’t been out chasing any, need to start carrying the camera more. Been doing some odds n ends on the layout, with the biggest one is a covered bridge, which is a pain, trying to get it to look right.
As for gas prices round here is 3.64 to 3.69, down from the 3.99 to 4.25 Memorial weekend. It’s not hard to tell the difference in taxes, in Terre Haute it’s 3.30 to 3.38. You can guess where we buy gas when we’re over that way.
Well [no toads, all left for higher ground], best get movin on some chores, while there's a little sun. Thoughts for all in need n ya’ll have a gooden

Well the van is parked in town again. Replacement coil worked great. However it doesn't help if the engine vapor locks. So later today or maybe tomorrow I'll go in with someone and we'll jump it off. Shouldn't have any problem starting it when the engine is cold. This is really starting to tick me off.

My parents had a new 1976 Dodge van with a  318 that would, as it aged, start giving them vapor lock trouble. Crank slowly and let it cool, then it'd start. They still kept it as an additional  vehicle well into the 90s. It was held together with baling wire, duck tape and chewing gum, but they wouldn't part with it.

Sorry it is a pain is it due to the heat/humidity down there?

Speaking of which...the a/cs have Been running almost constantly here now. So has the dehumidifier! One produces heat, the other cool.

Yeah, I think what I'm going to have to do is wrap the fuel line in something to insulate it from the engines heat.

The van is back in my driveway. It was vapor locked as I said. After dinner my father and I went to the Wal-Mart parking lot in his truck and jumped it off. Like I told him, jump it, turn the key, press the start button and it fired on the first crank. It was a pleasant drive home. On the layout front, nothing new to report.

Hi Guys,

Havent been in for a few days.

Jeff; That van is giving you all sorts of trouble lately isnt it.

Well I have been busy for the last few days removing a couple dead bushes at my house and my aunts, I will take them to the dump tomorrow ( they have a area that can chew them up and they provide free mulch afterwards )

Im looking forward to next weekend as I will be going to the Indycar race in Toronto. Very excited as I always look forward to going to the race and this year there is going to be a race on Saturday and Sunday.

Tonight I am having the most frustrating time trying to build a accurail triple hopper. Its giving me all sorts of fits, lol and I have built a few before. I may shelf it for the time being a build a boxcar, lol

Well it's been neglected, abused, stripped within an inch of it's life, worked on by God only knows how many teenage mechanics who thought they were God's gift to auto mechanics and hot rodded for who knows how many miles in it's thirty-two year existence. I'd say it's doing fair being that it's still on it's original engine.

What are the chances your father passes along his truck to you? To bad you couldn't really drive your mother's car, maybe it coulda been yours, too.

As I said before, but dind't think of at the time was to pass along our 92 Taurus to you. it only really needed a motor mount and to either keep an eye on the radiator fluids {easy to do} or to maybe replace it. The A/C didn't' work, but you don't have that now in the van either. The four windows rolled down! Oh well, we'd a driven it down to you too. It really was  a good car. Now with teh 98 gr caravan, I'd be skeptical to give it to you except to say we've rebuilt almost all of it!

Yeah, one of my friends had a Grand Caravan. It spent more time in the shop than it did on the road. That had to be one of the WORST vehicles Chrysler ever cranked out.

I wouldn't agree with that at all. I owned 3 of them and never had any problems but with one exception. The transmission needed rebuilt at around 36,000 miles on te 2nd one. It was the failure of a valve. I would have kept getting them, but every model year was bigger than the previous one. Couldn't get the last one in the garage without folding in the side mirrors. A real pain. But other than that, I liked them.

Evenin' folks!

Janie, may I get a refill on my decaf?  Thank you Ma'am....

Managed to get quite a bit done today, I guess.  Mowed the lawn (taking several breaks to cool down inside the house), went grocery shopping where with several specials at the store I have now accumulated 70¢ off my next fill up of the leftovers of dead dinosaurs for the PiP.  I looked again at some of the items (there are several that I use on the list) and I may stop back over on Friday and buy enough more to get another 30¢ off.  Almost wish the PiP held more than 10 gallons of the gunk....  But not quite. LOL  I also bought a new shovel and a 100' tape measure.  Moved 6 wheelbarrows full of dirt and raked most of it out where the hedge was removed.  Hope to have the area completed by the end of the weekend.

I decided to see what a local contractor would charge me to install the new fence.  If the cost is about the same as it would be for after renting the equipment needed to do it, I probably will have them do it.

Jeffrey and Tom, I have owned 5 Chrysler products over the years. 2 were great vehicles and 3 were, ah, not so great....  In terms of repairs and spending time in the shop.  A lot of the repairs were under warranty, but they seemed to want to suddenly have a lot of problems about the time the warranty was up......  Since I switched brands, I have had no problems whatsoever!  (knocks on wood...)

I haven't heard if my son is planning anything this year for the 4th. or not....  They may be on vacation somewhere.  doesn't look look like I will go to Boy Scout Camp tomorrow as they had rain again today...  I would doubt the road will be passable yet for me to get into the campsite to work.

Hope you all remembered to buy a 5th. on the 3rd. to celebrate the 4th.!  Have a great one..

That's like with anything, some have great luck with them, some not so great. I have bad luck with Chevy's. I always seem to get the lemon. Pontiac not so bad and my luck with Buick's has been good. The last one I put over 350,000 miles on it before I sent it off to the crusher. They pulled the engine and tranny, repaired the electronics on them and put them in another car. The body of the car was worthless except as scrap as it had several large fatigue breaks. It lasted for sixteen years. Worst cars we had maintenance-wise was an 85 Chrysler New Yorker and an 88 Chrysler LeBaron convertible.

morning coffee in the diner...

TODAY IS THURSDAY, JULY 4th, 2013,

 HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY!!!

I will lite the prayer candles at 9 AM for those in need...

MAKE IT A GREAT DAY!!!

 Let your {One's} hair down:

Meaning:

Behave in a free or uninhibited manner

The short origin:

Back in the Napoleonic days, the nobility of Paris were highly condemned if they appeared in public without a hairdo that was very elaborate. This meant hours of work and many hairpins. It was only when they were home that they could take all those pins out and 'relax'. When the pins came out, the hair 'fell down'. Thus, letting your hair down soon became a phrase to represent being relaxed

The other version:

Letting one's hair down was a commonplace part of women's daily activities in the 17th century. The hair was normally pinned up and was let down for brushing or washing. The term used for this at the time was dishevelling. Anyone who is unkempt and generally untidy might now be described as dishevelled, but then it applied specifically to hair which was unpinned. The first reference I can find which refers specifically to this is John Cotgrave's, The English treasury of wit and language, 1655:

" Descheveler, to discheuell; to pull the haire about the eares."

It's been busy at work and I am loosing one of my best guys because he found a job in the HVAC industry, I wish him the best of luck!!  Maybe a beer or two today and some chicken on the grill. It's gonna be another hot and humid day on the east coast. I plan on finishing the wiring to my layout and adding some lighting to it over the weekend.

Coffee and a breakfast pile please. Thanks.

20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2pm. Mostly sunny, with a high near 83.

HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY!!!!

Gas went down to $3.42 yesterday.

Inch- Get hold of me and we’ll work something out. Don’t let ‘em fool ya, there’s plenty other places I eatLaugh.

Welp, guess I’ll put in a few hours at the apartment this morning, then rest up a bit for the big 4th of July shindig my SIL puts on every year this evening bout oh…..5ish. Maybe 6. The thing starts at 2 with their villages fireworks at dusk, but I’m just not into that long of a party. Ya I know, Mr Stick in the Mud. At least it won’t be too hot this year as they have no shade. Band should be good though. They got Still Kickin’, a very popular local country band. They are calling it quits this year, a couple of them decided to focus on new and young families and the bands’ shhhheh-joool doesn’t allow for that. Lead singer is from Williamsville,or is it Sherman? Either way she did go to school here and happens to be dating my friend with the restaurant/apartments’…youngest son. So I’ll probably see him there.

Surprise Oh for crying out loud! We need to Furminate the dog….gee whiz Missy do you have any hair left?!

Ya’ll have a good day, ya hear!!!!

 Morning All.

    HAPPY 4TH OF JULY

Currently it is 70 with an expected high of 100, with the possibility of a thunderstorm in the afternoon. Typically our thunder storms do not bring too much rain, just a lot of lightning which causes brush fires.

I was able to get everything accomplished yesterday that I wanted, now back to w**k.

 Prayers to all in need.

Good morning and Happy Fourth!  Even those outside of the USA are free to celebrate with us.  The tradition is grilling and drinking beer.  I may do a steak, or I may get some ground lamb and do lamburgers again.  We had those a couple of weeks back, and they were quite tasty indeed.

I wish I could get a car to last as long as you guys do.  I've got a 2006 Saturn and it's falling apart.  I thought about replacing it when it needed its previous $1000+ repair job, but decided to do that job.  This time, it's $900 for some foolish emissions thing.  The car runs fine, but the dreaded Check Engine light is on, and it won't pass the September inspection like that.  The suspension is shot, and I'm losing coolant somewhere, too.  I'm thinking of trading it in come September and getting a Toyota to last the rest of my life.  Or, I may take my daughter's Toyota and give her the new one, after I retire and don't need to drive to work anymore.

90s today, and getting sticky inside now, too.  Time to turn on the train room AC.

Hey Gang!

Gonna chill out today, relax and stay in the A/C today, cuz hot and muggy is the name of the game outside today. Besides, I didn't get up til after 10 this morning. Embarrassed SWMBO turned off the alarm clock last night, and the normally noisy cats let us sleep til then!  Tomorrow I will pay for this,,,,gotta get up at the crack of dawn to get up on the roof and clean the gutters. Small Maple trees are growing in them!Surprise

Speaking of cars, the 99 Olds Alero got a new set of tires, and turned 200,000 miles last week. Rides well, runs well and still looks good. So I guess it will stay around another 40-50,000 miles.

On the Job front, a local large independent shop sent me an email through Linkdin yesterday, asking if I was willing to revisit working for them. Of course I responded, should hear back from them tomorrow. We will see where this goes!Wink

Well,,it 11 o'clock now,,,better go get a shower! Have a happy and safe 4th everyone,,,see ya later!Big Smile

Karl

NCE über alles! Thumbs Up

Mornin' everyone!

Happy 4th. of July to everyone Stateside this morning!  And to all our friends and neighbors around the world as well!  Zoe, to celebrate I'll have a Mexican omelet (yep need a bottle of xxx hot sauce), some bacon, and a double order of Sour Dough Toast to be all washed down with a huge cup of dark roast coffee in my R&GV RR mug please.  Oh a bottle of Tums might be nice too.

Just got a call from my son telling me the party is at his house and to be gthere by 4:30 with a potato salad....  I told him to reserve a spot close enough to his outside outlet for me to steal a charge for the PiP as payment for the potato salad.

Currently 81°F outside with a high around 85°F later today (about the time I get out to my son's house where they do not have much in the way of air conditioning....) with some light shows and rain to augment the fireworks tonight.  There was a fireworks show going on here in Geneva last night.  I couldn't see anything, but sure could hear it.  Probably down at the lake as my view of that is blocked by the trees up here on the hill.

[edit]  We have had our 4th. of July excitement here in my neighborhood already today.  I no sooner hit send when a Fire Truck and a dozen or so trucks and cars with the Blue lights all showed up right across the street from my house where an elderly lady lives....  This was followed by an ambulance all the way from the next county!  I guess all the local ones where on doughnut break.  After about 15 minutes or so the ambulance crew reappeared with the lady on the stretcher and put her into the ambulance.  She appeared to be awake so I guess that is good news.  She has been crippled for several years and I bet she fell....

Later!

Happy 4th of July!  * * *  *  * *

Ulrich .... Thanks for the greetings. * * *

Barry ... You too!

Of course, all nationalities are welcome to participate in the fun!

Galaxy .... Thanks for the safety warnings. I think it is the IRS bosses who are taking the Fifth instead of celebrating the Fourth! Whistling .... (sssshhhhh ....... Don't tell Vinnie I said that!)

Jerry .... Thanks for getting back with the info about the hamburger place. I see Casey on the map. Not sure if we'll be headed up eastern IL or not. We might have to stop in Evansville on the way. If so that might work. Otherwise, we'll be on mostly the Interstate through Paducah, Marion, Champaign, etc.

Todd .... I noticed you don't want Inch to see your Asian restaurant. I bet you don't want him to report back to the Diner about your behavior..... LaughWhistling

Mr. B .... How often are required to have your vehicle inspected? We don't have to do that here.

V8 Dennis .... I bet it feels good having the carpet clean again.

As I have said, 2 of our grandkids are here. We took them to Murray for dinner. Murray is a college town on the other side of Land Between the Lakes for here. On the way back we watched fireworks at Ken-Lake State Park. They do the fireworks on the lake, and you can see it from the bridge. We parked on the causeway which approaches the bridge and had a great view. Parking is normally not allowed, but both sides of the causeway was filled with vehicles as people watched fireworks.

Todd will be glad to know the dinner in Murray was at an Asian restaurant. The girls used their chop sticks.

Regarding vehicles, I have had mostly GM products. The most dependable is the Chevy truck I have now. It has had no problems at all. We got it new in 2002. Shelley's 2004 Caddy has never had a mechanical problem but some of its electrical and electronics have required expensive work. My worst was a 1987 Buick that needed its v-6 engine replaced. Second worst was a Ford needing a transmission replaced. Shelley is the one who has owned foreign cars from time to time. She has had good luck with German cars (Audi and BMW). For I while, she had an infiniti, and I hated driving it because, I never could find a comfirtable seat adjustment. My worst car accident was when I was driving one of her Audi's. A drunk driver came from nowhere and hit my drivers door at 50 mph. I think her car saved my life, but I never fully recovered from back injuries in spite of surgeries to repair it.

Have a great 4th, everybody!

Good Morning!

A Happy 4th to all our friends in the U.S. of A.!

I'm off on a week of holidays with just a bunch of house chores to do. I just finished a little cement patch on some holes in the garage floor. Salt and frost causes the surface to deteriorate. Naturally I ran out of the patching stuff so back to the local LBM store.

Speaking of being off, Oct. 31 is my official last day of work and I will then be RETIRED!  The company I work for made me an offer I couldn't refuse to go away so after 35 years I guess I will. I will be 66 just 3 days later so I suppose I've had a good run at it. They don't have any laws here where a company can fire you just because they don't like the way you look. If there isn't cause then they have to pay you to go away.

Nothing new on the layout front. I haven't done a thing down there for several weeks. One reason being that it is cold down there! With the AC on it gets cold after time as in 64F.

Speaking of cars that last, I've owned samples of all domestic makes. I had an '88 Chrysler LeBaron that lasted 12 years and 130,000 miles with few problems. I did have to replace the transmission but that was my fault. I basically cooked it towing a large trailer. I've had great luck with Volvos. I had a 2000 that I drove for 11 years until a truck hit it and it was written off. I expected it to last at least another 3 or 4 years as it was in great shape until then. The 2010 I have now has been trouble free.

Well time I did something else on the list so see you later.
