Good Morning Gang!

Today is Friday, October 28th, 2011 - Molli-Day on our tour throughout Germany.

Some more facts about Molli:

The line´s total length is just a few feet short of 10 miles. It was opened in 1886, but completed in 1890. The gauge is unique for Germany - it is 900 mm (short of 3 ft.), as opposed to the more common 750 or 1.000 mm "standard" narrow gauge used elsewhere in Germany. The line is completely steam operated, the locos built in the early 1930´s. in 2009, a new steamer went into service, built according to the drawings of the old locos. Rolling stock consists mainly of passengers cars from the early days of the line. The line is serviced by 22 daily trains, running every hour in each direction. Molli is a regular railroad, not just a tourist line. Shareholders are the county of Bad Doberan, the city of Bad Doberan and other minority shareholders. It employs 66 people and earns a little more than its keep.

A "new" steam loco, built in 2009:

Tomorrow, we will go to Lübeck. Lübeck was once the capital of the medieval merchant guild called "Hanse", a powerful organization having more political clout than any king of those days. The Hanse network consisted of trading posts all the way from Norway deep into Russia. The economical decline began, when the English and Dutch took over the world trade in the 16th century.

Lübeck served as a testing ground for the "moral bombing" strategy of the RAF during WW II. On March 29th, 1942, RAF bombers dropped 25.000 bombs on the medieval city, nearly wiping it out completely.

The adjacent U-boat shipyard and other industries escaped unhurt.

Lübeck was rebuilt in the years following the war, the reconstruction work finished as late as 1986. The city got back its medieval character and is now part of the UNESCO World Heritage.

Enjoy your day!
