Athearn Genesis F-unit lettering modifications

Is there a safe way to turn a Genesis GTW F-unit into a CN engine without ruining the original paint job? I've never tried to remove factory painted lettering or numbers from plastic engine shells so it takes some courage to start the project. Which paint remover / tool combination would remove the GTW lettering and leave the Athearn paint underneath in a usable condition? Paint wizards, please advise.[?]
