ok so there are a couple things I'd like your opinions on, one is about some custom locos I plan on doing and my upcoming layout.

The loco's I plan on getting and painting are Atlas Dash 8-40BW's do you think they would look better in a white with green striping similar to NYCRR looking scheme(with some CEFX style striping on the nose) or would they look better in Blue with gold striping(with SP&S striping on the nose.)?

would a 4' x 4' layout be big enough to support a double tracked N scale main with enough sidings/extra track to hold operations.

I don't have much of an opinion on the locos, but both schemes sound neat.

I do a bit of track planning, and I've messed with N scale plans a bit.  4 by 4 sounds tight for a double-track main line, but you almost certainly wouldn't be able to fit enough industries and staging for operations unless you model a subway system.  Dash 8 locomotives and (I assume) modern cars will need about an 11" minimum radius to look and perform well.  They will probably need #6 turnouts as well, and all that would be very tight in 4 by 4.

4 by 8 would be much better for a double track N scale layout, but double track and staging for operations would be tight, but it would be possible.  It sounds like space is tight, but even in N scale you will need to get as much space as possible.  4 by 4 with isles for access and running trains is roughly 8 by 8, so you might want to consider an 8 by 8 walk-in layout instead.

can't really do much beyond a 4' x 4' I'd try 4' x 6' but I share the bedroom with my brother. 2 track main is ice but not required, I suppose it'd free up some space for other things. 4' x 8' would essentially eat the entire bedroom floor. hmmmmm....

Hah! no Tom, I was thinking something more along the lines of this images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRFQA6aKUD9 kFZdj7xcFYTOHJTpytPYO3sfvXAcn2eLn2Ud2CV5g but with white as the primary in place of the dark grey and green in place of the White stripe.

Ok the biggest I may be able to go is 4' x 6' but it'll have to be modular.

It also depends on what you mean by "operations" .

Is operations realistic train operations?

Is operations realistic car movements?

Is operations running a large number of trains at the same time?

All of those are "operations" but they all drive a layout in a different direction.

hmmmmm, probably realistic train operations I don't feel I'm ready for waybills and car cards yet.

Well, after much discussion on the Nscale.org FB page I have come to the decision of 4' by 6' I suppose once I get the lumber next friday the fun can begin.

It's Name: Seattle Subdivision.

layout date(s): 1947-1950, 1970-1990's, and finally the 2000's.

RR's: BN, BNSF, GN, NP, CB&Q, SP&S, DRSX, PSAP, MILW, SP, UP, Amtrak, and maybe some east coast primaries like the chessie, CSX, NYC, and maybe a pennsy GG1 for fun.

Primary commodities: passengers, lumber, coal, and mixed freights, I mean lot's of mixed freights.

Towns that will be partially represented: Centralia, Bucoda, Tenino, and maybe outer Lacey.

Power: DC, block control with signals. hopefully some wlakaround throttles

Build: Modular

track: Atlas Code 55

Region: southwestern washington(I.e. the place this bonehead hails from Stick out tongue
