well since i dont see any bli big boys on evilbay ,i figure im gonna pull the trigger
Did you or your son turn in a claim to UPS for the damages & if so what were the results from that?
If not why didn't you make a claim?

Good question.
As to its value, I am not so sure that $300 is a good deal?
What kind of damage did it endure?

So then, why not !
I am totally confused here, how much was the orginal cost?

LOL
This entire transaction would seem to defy math, if not logic.
The whole story gives me a headache. Think I will go to bed and sleep on it.

If one lacks the patience and skills required to fix a damaged model it makes perfect sense.
I've been there and am totally able to understand.
When you spend a lot of money on a fine engine, you want everything to be right--then when it isn't, some of us can and will sell it for literally whatever we can get just to get rid of it because we are so utterly disappointed that the model falls short of what we expected or hoped for, and we can't stand to look at it in its current damaged state.
Finally, if or when somebody is able to fix said model and make it "right" (especially if I or we lacked the ability to do that) then it is easy to understand wanting it back again...
In my case, unless I could see the work firsthand, I would be more likely to buy a brand new (or even BLI factory refurbished, as I've had good luck with their Y-6B's I purchased that way) steamer and pack and ship it carefully--but perhaps with a different carrier.
My 2c.

Rich yep got 100 bucks for the claim & it realy wasnt that bad i talked to steve the guy who put it back together & he said it was fine after he ordered the detail parts & it ran like a swiss watch so i figure why not
I think where the OP went wrong was insuring the UPS package for only $100 when he sent the loco to his son. The original MSRP was somewhere north of $400, closer to $450 as I recall. Had it been me, I would have insured it for $400 or thereabouts.
As I understand, the OP intended to give the loco to his son. Now the OP wants to buy it back from the store that the son sold it to. Why would he want it back if he got rid of it in the first place?
My advice to the OP............. the loco has gone thru too many hands, and suffered damages that may be all fixed up, but more likely not. Remember, it can have internal injuries.
The loco is damaged goods. Forgettaboutit!

Rich well i will , what stinks is i took my MTH big boy down to the club to run it well.......... it sounded great but no moment what so ever, i reaquired the address 2wice same result , uggh everybody said what a nice looking loco it was.......... sorta like bringing the hottest girl to the dance only to have her throw up on you :(
Someone needs to translate this.
Say what?
ok now that i have some time lol
tue i brought my MTH BIG BOY down to the local club & i put it on the track aquirred the address 4017& the sound came up & started to smoke but....... no movement so i did it again , & stll no movement ugghh . i took it off & was checking the wiring & as i was doing that , everybody complemented me on how nice the engine looked ,,,, i felt it was sorta like bringing the hottest girl to the dance & she throws up on you, ugghh lol ..... i just would like an articulated loco to run for once

Sounds to me like the MTH BIG BOY has got its loco number mixed up. My understanding is that most DCC locomotives will go to idle (i.e. start the sounds and in your case the smoke) as soon as power is applied. If the loco address is mixed up you were likely sending commands to the wrong address hence no movement.
I think the best approach would be to do a factory reset and start from there.
I readily admit that I have no MTH experience so my suggestions could be way off track (pardon the pun!), but I have had the same thing happen several times with Intermountain factory equipped locos. Makes you want to get out a big hammer!

I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!

Might be time to move on and just use it as a display piece . Looks as if you're going to have to put out more money to have it looked at and hopefully have it fixed if possible.
I must admit, this thread totally baffles me.
It started out as a BLI big boy buy back and seems to be ending up as an MTH bad boy throw away.
