Bad Noises on a Bachmann B23-7

Question: My Bachmann B23-7 is making a real nasty grinding sound by the front truck, and the wheels are not moving when power is introduced. Is this a mechanical issue or is something stuck in the gearbox?

There is something preventing the wheels from turning, so probably there is something caught in the gears. I don't think that any gears are cracked, as I've never heard of this problem in Bachmann locos.

Something stuck in the gearbox is a mechanical issue.  When I used to work on steam turbines everything was a mechanical issue, including when a wire broke or came off its terminal Sigh

Check the universal going to the truck. Some Bachmann diesels have had problems with the universal coupling on the worm shaft cracking, and it will slip on the shaft and possibly make a grinding noise if it touches the truck frame. A strong glue (a dot of super-glue on the shaft did it for me) can fix the issue.

Thanks for the help. I took apart the locomotive and found that the driveshaft and the universal had become disconnected from a small pin on worm gear in the gearbox. The pin was snug when I re-inserted it to the shaft, so I left it and didn't glue it. The fun of it all is, how exactly did the universal become disconnected in the first place?

  1. As built / tampered with
  2. Dropped
  3. Walked off the shaft due to poor fit

If it does it again you will know it was #3

Not to discount any of the reasons, but this is just based upon reasoning by facts

1-Not likely, as its three years old with ZERO mechanical issues until now.

2-Hasn't been touched in 4 months.

3-Hasn't been touched in 4 months, however had been heavily used before hand.

Thanks anyway, though.
