adirondack, I'm not into G scale, but I'll give you my opinion here. I don't think anything is wrong with your locomotive. The reason it doesn't smoke much is because the smoke unit works off of track voltage and unless you run your loco at full throttle for any length of time, the unit will not produce enough heat to really put much smoke out. Hope I've answered your question here. Ken

I suppose you're talking about the Bachmann 4-6-0, right? When I was doing G scale several years ago outside, I bought one. I found out that I had to run it at almost full throttle to get the smoke unit to start working, but once it got going, I could throttle it back. Their smoke unit doesn't work nearly as well as LBG or Aristo. Do you know HOW used it was before you got it? Their early 4-6-0's were kind of balky, even on the cleanest of track. I understand that their newer releases are better powered and run much smoother. Can't tell you for sure, since I never really got into G--all that stooping over to lay track and such.

If your 4-6-0 is a Bachmann, you're not going to get much smoke at all from it or any other Bachmann model. The smoke unit in these locomotives is nothing more than a heating element, and the smoke fluid does not produce much smoke from that type of smoke generator. I have the Bachmann G-scale Consolidation and it doesn't smoke well enough to even bother with.

There's a German company named Seuthe that specialise in smoke units, not sure if they export to the US but if they do, they'd be worth a look. They seem to be the unit of choice for modellers adding smoke units in this part of the world.
