Trix Big Boy and code 83 track
Posted by Trix Big Boy and code 83 track on Saturday, July 28, 2012 7:05 AM

I am considering purchasing a Trix Big Boy Model # 22115 (which is the latest release) it is marketed to have  NEM wheel sets.

My layout uses Atlas code 83 track and turnouts and also includes a Walthers code 83 double slip and a double crossover.

My question is is anyone able to confirm that the Big Boy will operate on these track components without bottoming on the frogs or tie plates etc.

It is the flange depth that I am concerned with.

Thanks for any help

Could not find any real specks about what code track it will handle, but in this video when shows the rails they look pretty thin.

Flange depth according to NEM practices is slightly larger than according to NMRA S-4.2. It varies from

.023" to .046" as opposed to .028". Even with a NEM wheel flange at the upper limit, you should not encounter any problem running on Code 83 rail.

I went ahead and purchased a Big Boy and unfortunately it bottoms out on the frogs of the Atlas code 83 turnouts. Very unreliable due to frequent derails on turnouts.

Expensive display item.

Bernie,

My Trix Big Boy runs no problem on code 70

See it run here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xauEETzr3pQ

Just a note, I hand lay all my track and turnouts, and never have a problem.

My Trix Big Boy and Mikado both work well on my Peco code 75.

Bernie, are you sure it's the flanges bottoming out? I've found that some of my Hornby wheels are slightly wider than NRM and derail on atlas code 83 but run fine on Peco.
