WPF 7-20 / 7-23

It's late for a WPF, so I will start with an old photo. U18B MEC 404 "Kenneth Roberts" is an Athearn blue box shortened to the correct length by Chucks Chop Shop. I painted and detailed it

My project for the week, I ballasted the track, laid grass, poured and painted a grade crossing, and made a crossbuck out of a internet photo and a matchstick. Also, a new kato sd40-2 Mid

G Paine:  Nice work on the "Independence Class" paint job!

Sam:  You're off to a good start! Good thinking on that crossing sign. I'm looking forward to seeing your progress on the layout.

Nothing very photogenic going on my layout right at the moment, but lots to see and play with in 1/1 scale out at the R&GV RR Museum last night.  They brought RG&E Beebee Station (#1941) a 45 tonner out from the shop and let her pull her first train in many years.  She has been completely restored over an 8 or so year period and just needs a bit more tweaking to be put in full service.  Hopefully she will be ready for the museum's "Diesel Days" event in August.

Espee 4-10-2 #5011 lifting a 23 car freight train out of the South Yuba River canyon on a 2.2% grade.  The loco is a Westside model I recently acquired, painted and weathered.  It's the largest non-articulated steamer on the layout and quite powerful.   And despite its length and wheel arrangement, it will take a 34" radius with ease.

Great modeling this week as always. I completed my first diesel weathering job today. I used AIM powders then oversprayed with a  Matte finish.

Freshly painted Rock Island E6 #630 next to it's trusty, partially scratchbuilt AB6 stablemate.

Nice work all.

I've been working on pics of people, trying to get depth of field right, etc. Here's a sample, At the Pump in Red Mountain.

Let me take another stab at this. My first pic seems to have partially delinked for some reason, even after a reedit. I'll throw in a bonus pic to see if it's any different.

The Mother Jones Mill shop truck is headed out to a call, but the boss has some last minute instructions...

[well, is looks like imageshack is having problems...i'll try again later]

Mike:   While your pictures aren't loading in your posts,if I click on the space where they should be,they do open in Image shack. Nice sharp focus on those close-ups.

Mike,

Thanks for taking a peek.Just did what I normally do to post pics, but Imageshack or the Kalmbach server seem to have embedded images blue-flagged today.Sad

I have the focus down cold now. Next step is working the manual controls for better depth of field. I know it's there in the menu somewhere. I used to know how to do this stuff back in the analog days...Laugh

But it's sure  a lot cheaper to make mistakes with bits and bytes than with film.

Sean,

The ground is made of Sculptamold over pink foam, painted with a wash of acrylic paint that I custom vary to help blend, connect, and differentiate scenes. I'll be adding more textures, litter, etc as I go. Just getting to this really fun part of building a layout.

Red Mountain is the oldest part, having been started as a module before I bought the house, then sliced and diced to fit into the layout. Then it sat "en white" longer than any other part. I used to joke about it being the winter scene. Well, spring is here and it's always 72 degrees and sunny in my Little Colorado - at least once I switch the lights onCool

Now that the embeded pics are working for me again, here's another pic, this time from the ballast pit at the end of the Wilde Mine spur at Sheridan:

That's the crew of the Silverton RR's American Ditcher getting ready to quit for the day. Here the quarry is covered in sifted small, broken rock taken from the side of the Corkscrew Gulch trail across from the site of the famous covered turntable and switchback. I love the fantastic color, which is like a fresh breeze that takes me back to the San Juan Mountains when I look it over.
