Tom, as I read it, the person sending the car pays for the shipping to the layout and also provides a prepaid return postage for the return.  Apparently the flat rate box is a little over $11 so around $23 in round trip postage.

Thanks Simon.

Got it!  Thanks, Simon.  I missed that part in the original post.  That answers my question.

Tom

See that really don't seem like am asking that much on that part lol

I do like the idea that you're trying to do but the problems cited by galaxy and them would also keep me from participating. I would also feel REALLY bad if one of the cars picked a turnout and derailed, shearing off or breaking details. That would also cause problems for my Turtle Creek Central financial department. Why not bring the idea to the NMRA and then they could do it in their divisions. Your idea has some merit, it just needs to find another place to do it.

When was the last time you stopped in a RR hobby shop? Yes my opinion is right, nothing not one under the age of 25. Unless it was a father or grandfather taking there kids... and you know what they never get anything.

Perhaps in your neck of the woods but not in mine.  Although not a lot, I do see those 25 years of age and under coming into the LHSes that I frequent; sometimes by themselves and sometimes with a family member.  I also see them buying items, too.

I'm sorry you have a bitter taste in your mouth from when you were 11 years old.  There may have been other factors for not letting you run your observation car on the club layout but were never disclosed to you.  Maybe it was the way you asked or how you came across?  Maybe it was the 10th time someone had asked it that day.  I don't know.

When it comes to your own layout, you can make the rules.  However, you have to respect the rules of others; whether you agree or completely understand the reasoning or not.

I feel bringing the idea to the NMRA will just end the same. People fear something going wrong to much to get anything done.

tstage

In my neck of the woods, shops that have been open for 50+ years have close, and no new shops what so ever. I don't even have a hobby shop near me anymore for 150 miles. When I do get to the hobby shop, it is as I described. Am happy to hear that is not how it is all over.

Bitter taste comes from more then just that one time. I remember my words, "can I please put my car on the back of your train? I just got it today, and I don't have a layout at home to really enjoy it, and shelf don't go that far." Even if it was the  20th time someone had asked that day, if it was just me another guy from the club, and a father and son there is NO question. You let the kid put it on, and everyone has a smile on their face.

See rules are like paper work, the less we have the better. Put your train on the track, don't run in to the back of anything, if one car comes off the track 3 times pull it, don't go 1000mph... The only rule should be don't be stupid.

Well that is a real shame you were treated like that as a kid.  Round here the exact opposite happens.  Take a look at this Youtube of operations on the K-10 layout.   Not only are there several in their 20's but my two boys, 12 and 15 are welcome to participate in the operations.   On the first Sunday of every month kids of any age get to run on the layout.  Many of them bring their own trains.

SP4460:

Just wanted to let you know that I did get your nasty private message and I'm not impressed. Sticks and stones,as they say.

I already have suggested to you that, since you've made your proposal, you invite anyone who might be interested to contact you via the private message route to iron out the details.  Why don't you take up the challenge and try to make it work rather than sitting around blaming everyone over the age of 30 for something that happened to you when you were 11?

Its funny what we end up keeping with us as kids, but that just goes to show you need to be nice to everyone.

That's a real cool video, and set up. If I could ever make it out it would be a lot of fun to do. Wish I had something like that, and people around me that could do it.

You see I private message you to keep it off here. Telling you: I pi*s on my generation, and at least I try to do something new. Me tell you to take your worthless "whatever" and shove it is not that nasty.

My point for telling that story was to tell why I may come a cross as bitter, and that people of the hobby had let me down.

So instead of saying whatever, why don't you tell me how you would do it? Help iron out the details.

I already suggested twice how to do it.  You presented what you wanted to do in your first post.  Invite those who might be interested to contact you directly and iron out the details with them.  It is far easier to come to an agreement or arrangement with like minded individuals.  If you get 5 people that contact you directly to agree to a plan, you'll have your start.

It makes absolutely no sense to debate what you'd like to do with those of us here who apparently are either not interested or have reservations/concerns/objections.

By the way.  You'll attract more bees with sugar and honey.  Telling people that they're paranoid  or old-fashioned, or are somehow remotely to blame for some transgression you suffered when you were 11 will get you nowhere.

Well, if we were all in one town, it'd be an easy thing. But I'm in Dallas, and others are all over the US and Canada...

Pic it did work though, I have 3 CPR steamers for consideration...

CPR 2839 which pulled Southern excursions in the late 70's

CPR 5931 which is on display in Calgary

CPR 2816 with aux tender, which pulls CPR excursions today.

Triple headed CP steam, anyone?

First thing today, I would like to apologize. We all get our head up our a** sometimes. Maxman thank you for pointing it out. Have to remember were, and who I am talking to sometimes. Once more sorry for being a a**.

Any one of those would be fun, let a lone all of them at once! CPR 2839 is that one of the Jubilees? I would want the 5931 if I had to pick one.

If I ever get my layout worked out I have a GS-6 with a N&W auxiliary tender, tool car, power car, crew sleeper. All that fun stuff that's needed for excursions.

Hey,

2839 is a Hudson.

A Royal Hudson, actually, one of the shrouded versions.

It hauled Southern Railway's Steam Express through 70 and in to '80, I think as well.

It's presently at the Nethercutt Collection in California, on outdoor display.

I would not think brass stuff would be sent out... I mean I am vary laid back, and I be paranoid sending that out. haha

I like your idea of getting something basic, and doing modifications. What about the Walthers passenger cars? You can get random ones for less then $30 on ebay... most of them seem to be Amtrak ones right now too so it be easy to repaint. Custom paint, little extra details, fill them with people, lights... heck baggage car cut the doors out fill it with people hanging out.

IDK I like that idea, better then sending one a expensive one...

TA462

If it was just one car then it would be kind of cool to see something you own and detailed on someone else's layout with pics posted.   It seems like a lot of work and time involved though.

I don't know if I call it a lot of work, some time yes. After all at the most I am asking someone to do is play with trains. That don't seem like work to me Big Smile

Well only doing 20 (or less) instead of 57 would be cake for you then haha. I dont know I guess I just don't see taking something out of a box "work", or putting 20 cars on the track. For slot cars that I could see being alot more work... depending on how many you can run at one time it could be a lot of time taken up.

less then 10min's to open all the boxes, and put them on the track. One train with maybe one hours of taking photos on the high lights of the layout. If you do a video that might take 2 hours?

So have the train for 3 days, First thing take time and PLAY with it, and have fun that's the point FUN not work! Find the spots that will look best for photos, and take some photo's (1hr). The next day if you can shoot a few video's(2hr max). The third day box them up (20mins?), and down to the post office. So really 3.5hrs of your time I feel I am asking for... maybe a full 4 hours depending how far from the PO you are.

Maybe I am just odd, but I just don't think I can call that "work". I call work going out side for 8hr with a jackhammer splitting rocks, and packing them back to the truck (oh yeah fun when its 103 out).

I have participate in a few Car Tours that someone sent their car(s) and I enjoyed hosting them for a few days and sent the package on to the next approved participant .  One of these tours had issues with someone not passing the car on with one excuse after another until someone went to that persons hose to get the car and I believe one package got lost somewhere on route (it happens)  so there is always some risk.  The question is for both sides are you will to take the risk / responsibility to make the tour fun for all?

Heck, I don't even have a layout yet but still was able to participate and folks enjoyed some of the photos I did.  Could I have done the same with an entire consist (likely not but maybe) but certainly enjoyed hosting a car or two for a few days!

You got to love those bad egg's that mess it up for the whole lot. Do you know people who would be interested in the idea? Reliable ones that is.
