Truck geometry Athearn F7 vs. GP60 and ernst kits
Posted by sandusky on Thursday, June 28, 2012 7:16 AM

I bought an ernst kit #44 (for GP-7, F-7, UxxB, etc.) many years ago. First attempt at installation was a failure.

I'm making another attempt soon (in an F-7). However , I find there is no ernst kit for the Athearn BB GP60 and similar. I am unable to measure and inspect to see if there are differences in truck design, and, ultimately, is there a way to use the #44 kit for the GP38-2/GP40-2/GP50/GP60 locomotives?

Thanks-

Mike

Mike,

The only difference in the Athearn  Blomberg power truck I am aware of is the old outside bearing(metal side frames) vs the newer inside bearing(plastic side frames).  The gears should be the same.  I used a lot of Ernst re-gear sets in my 'BB' days - they always really howled a lot due to the tight gear reduction.

The Ernst gear installations also recommend cleaning flashing, etc as well as a good idea to bend the metal side frames at the bearing holder--typical truck tuneup tips.

I would think it would fit.  You can always put the gears in on the side with the gear shaft along with the wheel sets and check for backlash.   You want the gear teeth to hit midway between the tip and root.   You do not want the gear teeth tips to touch the root of the next gear.
