Kato HM-5 Motors for LL P2K Alco PA
Posted by RicZ on Wednesday, May 23, 2012 3:52 PM

Has anyone tried to remotor a Life Like PA (2000 series) with a Kato HM-5 motor?  What problems, if any should be anticipated?  I have several PAs that draw excessive amps.

Ric, did you ask about the PA's before? I will be interested in seeing the answer. Could you post a picture of the PA motor's? Reason is I am looking for motors for PK1 F-3's and think I need a motor for a PK 2 SD-7.

Ken, I will be happy t post the results of my re-powering effort when complete.  As a side, I have about five Life Like PAs that all draw 3-4 Amps when stalled (holding down the loco in DC until the motor stalls).  Too much for DCC decoders.  Recently I received some info through another forum (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/repowerandregear/) that suggested Kato motors were the best choice, but they kept referring to Athearn re-powering efforts.

I am just trying to nail down some specifics and problems that others may have encountered while re-powering these units.  Right now I am not sure what the best choice is for P2K engines - Kato, A-Line, Helix Humper, or NWSL.
