Buy one unlettered, they do come that way, in both sand dome versions.

Other than that, it is unlikely that you can remove the lettering without at least some damage to the paint.

Strip and repaint the tender and cab, or just paint over it. All these choices have their potential drawbacks.

Got no idea if it's the same composition, but I recently ran into a smilar mystery removal questions. Mine was with some Micro-Trains HOn3 C&S reefers. I tried 90% alcohol, which didn't do it. Then someone suggested Goo-b-gone or similar. Applied with a few rolls of a Qtip, then a quick swipe with a paper towel to remove the scum, that did the trick. But you have to be quick. The border between breaking up the pad printed lettering and getting into the paint underneath was very scary. I did four cars and only ended up messing up one panel on the first car.

YMMV

Yes, I know they come unlettered, but the guys I like to get my stuff from(best price by a mile) are out of the unlettered ones. This is why I posted this thread. I thought if there was a simple way of removing the lettering Id save some big $$, but alas it looks like I wont. Thanks for the replies.

Call Bachmann Technical Support and ask them if there is a safe way to do it before giving up.

i have had some luck with MicroSol and rubbing it with q-tips. Some come out fine while others show a slight dis-coloring of the paint. On the latter i end up just dunking what ever im working on into a bowl of 91% or put some MicroFilm over the area as a "patch."

SWFX,

Good point. Microsol is heck on decals, but pretty safe for paint.

In general, in facing an ambiguous lettering removal job, start with whatever's safest, then move up the ladder, until it's either gone or you reach your level of tolerance for paint job preservation anxiety.
