Can a locomotive be this cheap?

I was on M.B.Klein's website a few minutes ago and they had a new Bachmann steam locomotive ALCO 2-6-0 with DCC and sound for $109.99. This has to be a misprint.
Being old is when you didn't loose it, it's that you just can't remember where you put it.

The new Bachmann 2-6-0 is made to be an inexpensive, generic steam engine with very basic sound functions, so the price isn't a misprint.Smile From what I hear, they run well and the sound quality is very good.

Bachmann"s wish list retail price is $175 (http://www.bachmanntrains.com/home-usa/products.php?act=viewCat&catId=462), so I don't think Klein's discounted price is a misprint.

Actually that's pretty darned expensive... especially considering that MicroMark has 'em for $107... $99 if you don't mind letting them pick the road name...

No misprint.

$94.99 with DCC and sound At wholesaletrains.com and you can pick the roadname.

I like both the Bachmann brand, and wholesaletrains.com. {Of course I live close enough to wholesaletrains.com I can go to their brick and mortar store}.

Bachmann has worked tirelessly to upgrade their products and warrantees, and offers them "on the shelves" {no preorders and waiting} for very reasonable prices. SOme don't like their decoders, though, and swap out for a "better" one. Bachmann's DCC Sound OnBoard locos come with soundtraxx sound, some replace with their favorite sound system. I have several Bachmann DCC OnBoard locos, and they all run great. {One does growl at slow speeds and I should return it to Bachmann}..

All, in all, I think good decent value.

But many are becoming aware fo Bachmann's products, so they can go fast!

Good for us, just the opposite of what you normally read here about the price of model railroading. Big Smile

I got one from Micro-Mark and am very happy with it. One thing I did do was put a heavier spring on the front truck to help hold it down on sharp curves.

Go join the Bachmann forums. There are a couple Bachmann rep there.

It is not against model railroading hobby rules to belong to more than one forum.

Some seem trapped here or afraid to venture out. With the Internet, any hobby has a huge community.

Depends.... if it says "In Stock", then they do.  If it says "Available", they're getting it from somewhere else, so be prepared for a wait.

And before you drool too much over their price, be aware that their S&H, at $21, is among the highest in the business (or was, last time I ordered from them).

Hi KEN- Please see my TWO posts to you in the Diner for answers.

BUT:
If it says "Next Day" on wholesaletrains.com's website, they have it sitting ont he shelves. If it says "available"...they can get it and ship out  USUALLY within 3-5 business days. They may get form a supplier, but they get it very fast. THE LONGEST I ever waited was lemme see..I think 7 days for an order....

Second...see the example of shipping/handling  costs in the 2nd DIner thread. They generally ship  Fed Ex. Their shipping costs are a little hihger in some cases than others, but if you see the LOCO example inthe diner you will see they STILL come out cheaper than the others. The shipping/handling  costs include the shipping, the box and someone to load and sticker box...BECAUSE they DON't CHARGE a  price that would reflect that, like the higher cost of the other seller's loco...

Here is the example form the diner:

Many complain about wholesaletrains.com carrying a higher shipping/handling charge than others, BUT here are some statistics:

>wholesaletrains.com charges $53.99 for a Bachmann Diesel DCC ONBoard loco {REAL example- a GP7}.

>MB Kline [modeltrainstuff.com} charges $ 65.99 for the SAME loco.

>Another local hobby shop here is closing their store and going webbased. They are charging $78.40 on the web for the SAME loco.

>>>>NOw, last I knew for a small business {a friend had one} is that UPS charged I think it was $5.39 for the first pound of a package to ship ground 5-7 days. So assume Around $6 now with prices/costs going up everywhere<<<<

>wholesaletrains.com MAY charge you $10.01 shipping and handling for putting it into a box and lableing it to you.

>modeltrainstuff.com may charge you $8.00 for same

>and the third example may only charge you the $6.

SO: wholesaletrains.com has the HIGHEST shipping/hadling cost, BUT:

wholesale trains loco comes out at $64.00,,, MBKline comes out at $73.99 and the third one comes out at $84.40 for the SAME loco.{forget aobut any taxes also owed- I would have to pay NYS sales tax}

SO...WHICH IS STILL coming out as THE BEST PRICE??? wholesaletrains.com!!!!

{{>>I am NOT Affiliated with them and get no special treatment or discounts form them<<}}

Just thought enquiring minds would like to know.

I certainly don't want to turn this into a bashing thread, but I do exactly that analysis every time I buy something on line.  It's rare when Wholesale Trains comes out on top.  And I got charged $20.95 for shipping and handling.  For standard shipping at that.  That was about 16 months ago.   Last order I placed with them.

My last order took 12 calendar days to ship and 4 to reach me after that.

Never the less -- the point is well taken.  Shop around for the best price.
