I sat down in the chair, having received a quite sketchy turnover (both of us expected him to be gone less than 5 minutes). Almost as soon as he left, there was a problem with the nuclear reactor which required it to be shut down. So we went up to the surface to snorkel (use the emergency diesel to provide power) in a North Atlantic winter storm. We stayed there for three hours and the Officer of the Deck would not allow me to be relieved for the entire time. I was not so willing to give head reliefs after that, and I insisted on a full turnover if I did.
