Changes At Strasburg RR
Posted by Hamltnblue on Sunday, October 9, 2011 9:06 AM

Yesterday I took my son to the strasburg RR.  It was a beautiful day and the parking lot was full.  It's been a little while since I've been there but it's always a great place to return to.

There are a couple of things that have changed as well as work in progress. I'll put a couple of them in threads with pictures but the major one's I saw are:

1. An additional team track was added and more commercial use is present since the population in the area has grown.

2.  A building project is on-going in the museum that takes away from the visit, although is probably necessary.

3. Museum trains have been shifted around some to shake things up as well as additions.

4. The Amish neighbors seem to be interacting with the public more.

5.  Track work is on-going including tie replacement and ballasting.

6. Old number 90 looks freshly overhauled and painted.

Here's a link to my photobucket album of the day.

Thanks for posting as this is one of the places I very much want to visit. I especially want to see the Pennsy E44 electric and the world's last EMD E7.

I looked on the museum's website, but it doesn't give specific details as to train rides.  I've seen videos of steam train runs at Strasburg behind 1910-20s era type coaches, but does the museum offer train rides on streamlined equipment behind diesels?

Also did you see stainless steel streamlined cars?  If so, were they in good shape?

"I like my Pullman Standards & Budds in Stainless Steel flavors, thank you!"

The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania is ACROSS THE STREET from the Strasburg Railroad. The MUSEUM doesn't run trains at all. Strasburg Railroad runs the steam trains.

They are separate entities with separate fees for entry UNLESS you buy the Strasburg "Rail Baron's Pass" which INCLUDES admission to the RR museum of PA.

After long and careful thought, they have convinced me. I have come to the conclusion that they are right. The aliens did it.

The only ride's I've seen are behind the steamers and on very nicely refurbished early passenger cars.

Nothing much on-site that are streamliners right now.

The E unit is there. It's on my photo album of last visit. Here's the link to that album

Here's the E unit.

A metroliner:

Not sure what this is. It's self propelled

2.  A building project is on-going in the museum that takes away from the visit, although is probably necessary.

Necessary evil...That project is nearly a year old now...but will save the museum gobs of money in heating and cooling through the installation of a state of the art geothermal HVAC system.

There will be a roundhouse building project coming up in the next couple years. Supposedly the money is all in place, and the architect is in the process of rendering up the final plans at this time.

ANd it will make it a much more pleasant place to visit, particularly in the summer. We always set up around the end of June when they do Reading Railroad Days, and to say that it is hot in there would be an understatement. Hopefulyl it will be ready to go by next summer and the crowds will be even bigger.

Here are a couple of local news reprots on the project. I actually appear int he background of one of them and my train features in both of them.
