Some time ago you could download at the MR web site an article from MR Jan 1962, "To Hardscrabble, the hard way: a track plan" by John Armstrong.
This article was the key for my new narrow gauge railroad. I've expanded the plan for my 13' x 16' (4m x 5m) room and made a few changes.
Important, my staging yard is dual gauge. Narrow gauge trains run from staging to Esperanza and don't start at Esperanza. Here's my draft for the lower level.
and the "upper" level.
For now I have to empty the room and install some background. And building turnouts. This is the very first turnout for this layout, code 70 #8 dual gauge:

Excellent start Wolfgang. Looking forward to seeing your progress.

So does this mean that the west port terminal railroad is no longer in use and is being replaced? If so sorry to see it go as I thought it was quite a nice layout. In a rather average space for most home owners in America you managed to achieve staging, a working yard and engine terminal, a considerable amount of switching in rather realistic looking settings, a fairly long main line run, continuous running as an option, good access, and a plan that could be adapted to other venues as well as a port setting. One venue that could easily have been used instead would be the Midwestern United States from Ohio River area west ward with just some minor changes to scenery and industries. I thought you really had a great layout and thank you for sharing it with us.
My Westport Terminal RR is still alive. Well, I can operate it. But I've stopped building more scenery. All tracks are laid. I should do more scenery at Plywood District, and Westport yard. And the Harbor needs some water....
But for the next time I will build my Pueblo & Salt Lake RR in the next room. Silver Valley RR modules will be stored under the layout and taken to FREMO meetings. In two weeks I will participate with my narrow gauge modules at the Conventin in Rodgau.
Now I've started with room preparation for back drop.
And I've built more turnouts, here's the collection, so far...

And yes I am 17.
Yes, lucky. But now I'm diagnosed with Cholangiocarcinoma. I hope those cancer cells know I need another 10 years for this project.
More work with backdrop.
And in the meantime I'm building turnouts.
I hope it was diagnosed at an early stage, Wolfgang!
My sincere go out to you!
I've had a surgery, but they told me in the last cut were cancer cells still. Next will be liver. And so I hope...
Well, I think for my Pueblo & Salt Lake RR I need ten years til finished with scenery. Structures take some time, and I guess I will scratch built a lot.
SCRATCH BUILDING IS FUN
And another turnout. This is a code 70 dual turnout for staging yard. My staging yard is in a loop, therefore I need a transition track. (Look at the plan at the beginning)
I've built this turnout with adjacent transition track.
And here's a draw at Alamosa wye
Wolfgang.
I've painted the sheets with white as primer.
and I'm busy with building turnouts for staging, I need still ten more.
Wolfgang ... Thanks for showing your layout progress. Also, I was sad to hear about your surgery for cancer. Ulrich mentioned in the Diner your health problem. Feel free to visit the Diner again. Everybody is always welcome there.

Thank you, I hope to finish this ten year project, the P&SL RR.
Now I've painted the backdrop.
Finished!
For the next time I will install the Silver Valley RR again, a reminiscence until the FREMO meeting in January. Tiis way I can take many pictures from the Silver Valley RR. Then I have to put all modules to boxes for the meeting.
Best of luck Wolfgang, I hope your treatments are successful. I enjoy your work in the hobby particularly the westport.
Report!
Until now I've built most turnouts for Esperanza and staging yard. These are over 15 and a crossing. Nearly all turnouts are dual gauge ones.
Seven dual gauge turnouts are left to build for staging yard. The wood for the benchwork is cut and waits for assembling. And this is my latest HowTo for building turnouts.
But until mid January, FREMO meeting in Unna, the Silver Valley RR will have a reminiscence in this room.
I can buid turnouts, run trains - and take pictures.E.g. train No. 53 on it's way to Silver Creek:
