Teen Model Railroader Place --Fall 2011--
Posted by ns3010 on Tuesday, September 27, 2011 6:37 PM

Now that it's FALL, it's time for a new place, so here we are.

Some more progress from me:

Picked up an Atlas Trainman Railbox from the LHS on Sunday

Walthers order came yesterday with three Platinum Line plastic pellet hoppers and 50 Busch trees. The hoppers look amazing and complete the minimum number of cars that I need to operate the layout. The trees are so-so, but you can't beat the value (50 trees for 30 bucks). Since I'm on a budget and don't have time to sit around and wait until I have money for better looking trees, I can deal with it. They don't look bad, there's just better trees out there.

Paving work continues, and the Kuiken Bros. Lumber lot is almost done, as is the driveway for the bakery, but I need more styrene before I can finish up the bakery.

Photos to come.

Sawyer, the layout looks great! Keep up the good work!
Although I have to ask, when did you start on this layout? I must have missed that somewhere during the insanity that is my life...

And I feel you guys on being busy...  One AP class, an online class, other homework, hockey three days a week, college applications and associated essays and paperwork, surprise scholarship essays, and everything else. Tongue Tied

Anyways, I'm gonna keep working on the layout (and finally get photos) as time allows, and I hope you guys do the same!

Today we go to Strasburg Railroad. I should also get some things I ordered today.

Oooooooh, so jealous! I haven't been to Strasburg in the longest time... I really need to get back there, soon.

Here's a "trailer" for some of my recent progress:

Some things to note are the addition of new trees (left of the train) and the plastic pellet hoppers (out of focus, in between the loaded centerbeam and way-out-of-scale glue bottle.

More to come.

Welcome back, everyone!  Spent most of today at a train show in Bixby. Got a great deal on this beauty--a Spectrum DASH 8-40C.  THe gearing is perfect, you have to really crack the throttle to get her to move fast.  She has kind of a rubbing sound on the inside that I'll have to check out, but hey, for $45, who's complaining?  Sorry about the crummy photo, I took it with my phone Embarrassed.

I also finished the main trackwork on my extension, all that is left is to wire it up.  THen I can start working towards the walthers turntable and roundhouse.  My birthday is in about a month Whistling

Nice Dash 8, Acela! I'm going to need a few myself, but I was thinking of the Atlas units.

Finally, photos!

Trees:

Plastic Pellet Hoppers (one of three):

Railbox:

Kuiken Brothers Lumber site:

Since that last photo was taken, the rest of the lot received its first coat of paint. The entire lot will receive a second coat of paint, some light weathering, and finally some Dullcote. The entire process will be repeated after I buy and lay styrene for the lots at the bakery and team track.

Also, I've created a new construction blog on Blogger. It provides a lot more flexibility than a blog on Google Sites, so I figured I'd give it a shot, and I like it so far. Be sure to follow it!

Nice work fellas, my project this weekend, aside from everything else I need to get done for school, is clean off my desks and get some storage for the foam I have and basically tidy up

I'm putting in the first of my scenery and it is fun. I got tired of my old Herbie picture so I took a new one.

Since last time, I went out and bought 20 pairs of couplers (Kadee 58s), a bottle of Scenic Cement, and some styrene.

About a dozen cars/locos now have new couplers. The scale couplers look much better, and the metal should prevent against breaking in hard couplings (something I've been known to do).

The last part of the lot at the bakery has been paved with styrene. It will be painted soon.

I've been busy ballasting the last few days where I've had a little free time here and there. I still have a lot to go, but I've discovered that it's not quite as hard or annoying as I thought. It's still hard and annoying, but just not quite as much as I originally suspected.

Photos to come.

I'm known for running a train backwards through a turnout set against it.

BUMP!

I've made progress! See here for elaboration and photos!
http://tristaterail.blogspot.com/2011/10/photo-time-part-ii.html

I now think that, at the time of publishing, the ballast completeness percentage was a little low. However, I've done more since then, so I would have to say that it is at least 80% done now.

Joe, nice work man! I've been making slow but steady progress on the loop and am to the point when it's time to start thinking ops for the next layout. It'll either be an L or U in 'modules' or a 36" door

Thanks, Sawyer!

Progress continues, albeit slowly. All of the styrene for the lot at the team track is in place, but needs joint filler, sanding, painting, and Dullcoting. And then I need to build the ramp. Ballasting is 95% done. I have about five feet of track to finish up, and of course, I ran out of ballast, so I'll pick some more up tomorrow.

Also, I won an Athearn Genesis (old run) NYSW SD70M on Ebay. It was shipped today (the bidding ended over a week ago, but there was a mixup, since resolved), and I should have it by next week. It will eventually be patched as TSR 3502.

I have a four day weekend this weekend (starting tomorrow), but there will be minimal modeling time because I'm leaving for Boston tomorrow. I'm looking forward to riding the T and maybe a little railfanning as well.

I'm working on a little scenery, but the finished scenery is needing some cleaning

Quiet here, eh?

Nice scenery work, Justin.

Here's the Susquehanna SD70M that I mentioned in my last post. I need to tinker with it a little (has some tracking issues and lights aren't working) and add a few details (one sunshade and a ditch light are missing), but it's good other than that. I'll also need a decoder for it.

I've been busy lately, but I've done a little here and there, most notably, beginning work on the overpass:

The plan for the overpass has changed; details here. I also picked up a set of concrete retaining walls and installed them on the back side of the hill on Saturday after that post was made, so that's not noted on the blog.

I took advantage of Walthers' sale prices on a lot of stuff that I need, as well as free Black Friday shipping, so I'll be expecting a package within a week or so.
