air brush painting
Posted by thortenney on Thursday, January 27, 2011 9:22 AM

I just finished my home made spay booth. I went with the bathroom fan, Thanks to all of you who helped me with that project. My next question is i have two different air brushes, The oldest is a Iwata -Eclipse that my brother in law gave me. the 2nd is a Grex Genesis,XBi.  I have never used a airbrush. What type of paint should i use to practice? Do i need to thin it? What is the usual air pressure you use? Etc,   Thanks, Thor!

I use an Iwata AB and spray mostly acrylics. You will want to thin to the consistency of milk. I use Tamiya paint and their brand thinner. Acyrils are nice because they clean up with water and don't have the smell of enamels. I recommend a mask either way. About 60 percent paint and 40 percent thinner works for me. As far as PSI it depends on what I am doing but 20 PSI works for most projects. but for fine detail work I may go down to 10 and spray up close for fine lines. I took small old models and just practiced on them using different pressures and consitincies. The best thing to do is practice and see what works best for you as well as your compressor may dictate what PSI you use.
