I assume you are referring to my post.....

The screens were purchased through Amazon.com from Fisher Scientific located n Rochester, NY.  Cost, $35.70.  Total with shipping and Tax, $43.45.

Nice screens, they tend to stick together, but I figure will loosen up as they are used.

How about a little "year in review?"

The big news for 2010 was the commencement of the major reconstruction of the peninsula, and the beginnings of the "final system plan" implementation.  Here's where we were at the beginning of the year:

The old temporary loops that served for several years to keep trains running.  Operations under these circumstances led to the discovery of a number of problems with the original track plan, and a near complete revision of the staging yards and this part of the layout were devised.  In January, we began with the construction of the new west end staging yard on the opposite side of the room, and by June, we were ready to start tearing things up.  Here's the same view as above during the "deconstruction"

 

With this out of the way, I could install the revised east staging, which went from being a through yard to a return loop.

 

Once that was in place, I could begin reconstructing the main lines on the peninsula.  We had a work group in late June to get the main right of way work done.

The net result was this tangled mess...

 

Since June, I've been gradually adding the base scenery, and detailing scenes as time and resources allow.  The main lines still aren't connected to staging yet, and the yard still needs to be totally reconstructed, which in my present economic state may take years.  But I've constructed a small yard for Elkins, and have completed the Thomas Sub from there to the Paper Mill, so I can at least do some point to point operating and bump a few cars here and there.

Here's the latest project, a highway bridge to provide access from the Fifth Dimension into the town of Thomas, W.V., and the scenery around it.  The overview shot can be compared to the first shot of this post to give you an idea of the extent of the surgery thus far.

 

Highway bridge is installed.  Still working on some of the details, but the highway is aligned, and the surrounding scenery is roughed in.

Looks like a snow day today...  Should get some more done.  Also have a couple of decoder jobs to catch up.

What NE Iowa Needs Now!
With record snowfall this season, I whish I could be out to see if any plow flangers are at work, however I doubt that we have had enough snowfall at one sitting to require one. This is a freelanced snowplow based on an ore car with a shifted front truck. The engine is a custom painted (as a patched ex-IMRL) Kato SD45, & it needs hoses & weathering. Since I don't yet have a snow shelf display, I used a white trash bag that I crumpled, & laid over the track, the background is a poster board, with a Photoshopped gradient added in for effect.

Great pictures this week, and a time for diversion with my grandson to sit next to the tree and run my Dad's Marx set around in endless circles. At 10 months old he is happy each time the train comes by- and so am I!

Once, I lived along the Boston & Maine's Fitchburg Line, in Concord, Massachusetts.  On a fall day, I was sitting in my living room and I heard a whistle.  To no one in particular, I said with great excitement, "That's a steam whistle!"  I ran outside in time to catch a glimpse of a steam engine puling a string of coaches.  This was 1973.

I had the presence of mind to immediately call the B&M, and ask to speak to the dispatcher.  They put me right through, and he told me that it was a charter, because someone was both rich enough and cool enough to hire a steam train for his wedding.  I asked when the train would be returning home, and got an approximate time that it would again pass by.  I took the day off, and this time, I had my camera ready.

Now, we're going through old slides.  To my great surprise, I found the silly adapter that lets me scan slides into my computer.  So, it all came together on this weekend.

I suspect that this was the last time that steam ran on the Fitchburg Line, and perhaps on the B&M as a whole.  It was a glorious day.

It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.
