Where have the Avatars gone?
Posted by Espee Black Widow on Wednesday, November 24, 2010 6:39 PM

Does anyone know why, when I'm logged in to the forum I can't see anyone's avatar in the left column next to their post but when I view the forum without logging in the avatars reappear? Is this normal?

I seem to remember seeing them when I was logged in as well. At least I thought I did.

It must be your settings. When you are logged in, the server automatically assigns your view artifacts according to your set preferences. It would appear that yours are (suddenly?) set to not show graphics. Some people opt for a graphics-less view if they have slow connections or minimal paid data capability each month. You'll have to enter your profile and see what's up. Crandell

Crandell,

What settings should I be checking?  And what should it be set to? Thanks.

It's not a setting in the forums - some forum software has an option to turn the avatar display on or off, but not this one. It could be that you have blocked the url that the avatars come from in your browser or web filter. I have the ad site blocked so I don't see any ads on the right, just blank space. Do you see just blank space, or do you see a broken link symbol? BTW I can see your avatar just fine, assuming it's the SP logo.

I see a bunch of dashes and under the dashes I see the person's username and then under that the number of posts. What does a broken link symbol look like? I don't think there is one shown though.

Yes my avatar is the SP logo. Thanks Randy.

Sounds liek it's just not showing any picture at all. The dashes are the post ocunt thing, yours are currently all empty, mine should be showing as all green, otherws will have verious amounts of green filled depending on their post counts.

Very odd. What browser are you using?

If you're using Internet Explorer, go to Tools, Internet Options, the go to Advanced tab. Then click on the Restore Defaults button at the bottom of the window.

Randy, I'm using Internet Explorer 8.

Motley, I restored the defaults under Internet Options. Unfortunately it didn't change anything. Still no avatars.

There must be a setting buried in here somewhere that controls the displaying of the avatars. The question is what setting is it?

Did you click on compatibility view? It is a button that looks like a torn piece of paper next to the address bar. Mine is clicked because some things weren't showing on the screen.  If you don't see the icon you can click page and then compatibility view.

Just so you don't feel like the Lone Ranger.  Whistling     my computer with XP crashed. the  new  windows 7 and E 8 do the strangest things. On some of the threads on this forum  I see a red X  and no picture.
I have to right click and hit "show picture" to get the picture. I may have to call in some IOUs from my sons to get this and other issues resolved.

Good Luck

If nothing works, try this, it worked for me.  I'd been having various graphical problems with internet sites.  I created a new user account, and logged in on the new account.  Graphics, atavars and every thing started working again.  So I now use the new user account for everything.  I was even able to move the old email files over to the new account.  Everything has be OK since then.

So it seems that screen displays go thru, and get munged by, code in your user account.  When something goes wrong in the user account, the screen display suffers.  Just what goes wrong and how to fix it (as opposed to swapping it out)  is unknown.

Back in my previous programming life we called that sort of thing "spaghetti code".

Scroll down to multimedia

on mine all check boxes under multimedia are checked except for 1) Always use cleartype for HTML and 2) Show image download placeholders

Is it just the avatars or all graphics/photos. For instance, can you see the photos posted in Weekend Photo Fun (WPF)? Can you see the MEC Consolidation locomotive at the bottom of my post? Both my avatar and the MEC loco come from the same source - Photobucket

IE8, Windows 7 - I do NOT have to use compatibility view for the site to work properly. If having really odd problems, try running a decent spyware scanner. Malwarebytes is free and works very well. Some malware is so poorly done that it is very obvious when things aren't working right - you browser opens to some odd web site, when you try to search you don't get Google or Yahoo or Bing or one of the other well-known search engines, etc. But some is much more subtle and manifests itself as certain sites not opening or other little things that you might not notice since it seems like your main sites are working fine or only have a slight little glitch.

I signed into the forum on another computer using XP and IE 7 and still couldn't see any avatars while signed in. When I logged out, the avatars reappeared. I deleted my avatar and tried to replace it with another one to see if it would help. After I tried to make the change in avatars now it doesn't display my new avatar at all. I have to think the problem is with the forum and not the computer. I will have to see if I can get some help from customer service or whom ever oversees the forums.

That really is strange.   I can see the Avatars fine when someone has one and see my own okay.   Is there any size restriction on posting one?

I'd vote for clearing the cookies/cache out of your browser.  that ususally seems to fix *everything* insofar as random errors (at least the non-virus/trojan/bad stuff (tm) random problems).

As for the adding a new avatar, there are a few threads about the issue, and it's been brought to the attention of the admins.

Thanks Dan. I'll try clearing out the cookies if there are any. I'm pretty sure that when I reset the internet defaults that it deleted the cookies in the process.

I'll try searching out the threads on the avatar and see what I come up with. I sent an email to Customer Service explaining the problem. Hopefully they will be able to help or send me in the right direction.
