Fire box on a Bachmann Specturm
Posted by Been Nothing Since Frisco (BNSF) on Saturday, October 30, 2010 12:24 PM
I just bought a bachmann spectrum 4-8-2 mountain off of ebay and got it last night. I put in a decoder and ran it for a few minutes. I notice the fire box has a light bulb in it, yet I can find a function to control it. Is it wired for the decoder? Or is it directly to the track?

The firebox LED is wired directly to the track and cannot be controlled by the decoder without rewiring it.

I've never tried to rewire one, so I have no idea how difficult that may be; however, since the decoder is in the tender and the LED is in the locomotive, it would require additional wires between the tender and loco..

The way Bachmann locomotives are wired, the two-conductor plug connects the tender wiring to the locomoitve wheels for electrical pickup, and the 4-conductor plug provides power to the motor and headlight.
