Hi there! I don't know if anyone can help but I'm looking for info on the Con-Cor N scale CSX loco #8914. I have heard it's a really old model and no one has any for sale or even in their computer databases. I just wanted to see if anyone and any information on it such as value, date they were built, etc. The loco is Grey with blue and yellow accents. Thanks!
Well, I'm not an expert on such things, but according to the following website CSX #8914 is/was an ex-SCL SD-45: http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/locolist.aspx?id=CSX&Page=61.
There was an article by Jim Kelly in the June 2001 issue of MR called "N Scale Diesel Locomotive Roundup". There was included in the article many different locomotives listed by prototype model, and within the model group listed by manufacturer. According to the listing, Concor imported an SD45 that was made by ROCO in 1985. This model had the same shell as a previous model Concor imported in 1972 which was made by Mehano. The chart indicated that the 1972 model was reviewed in the April 1972 issue of MR, and also notes that the model had an "inferior mechanism".
The main part of the article, which sort of gives a history of N scale locomotive production, states that "Not only was there little new during the dark age of the '70s and early '80s, but the quality was often bad, what could fairly be termed J-class (junk). The worst came from Mehanotecknik in Yugoslavia, but Austria's Roco and Italy's Lima and Rivarossi were only slightly behind."
I would sort of assume that your CSX painted loco was imported in one of these two batches, unless Concor re-imported them after the article was written, in which case the above article doesn't apply.
Try not to spend too much money on the thing!
