Posted by Hot wheels nerd on Wednesday, May 12, 2010 12:28 PM

Would like to build a layout w/ 1/50th scale trucks etc.  What scale train would this be? Also who sells a concrete or quarry plant buildings etc. in that scale?  I'm a newbie but need to take on a hobby to get rid of stress  LOL so my wife says.  Thanks w/ any info.  I'll post pics as I build.

1/50 is a tad smaller than O scale. Try looking around at http://www.walthers.com and see what they have. Remember, Google is your friend

When in doubt. grab a hammer.

If it moves and isn't supposed to, get a hammer

If it doesn't move and is supposed to, get a hammer

If it's broken, get a hammer

If it can't be fixed with a hammer... DUCK TAPE!

O scale (usually 3 rail) is 1:48th the size of real trains. If you are looking at 1:50th scale, I think it might be doable.

Is the 1:50 scale important?  Or is that just a starting point?

Most model railroaders work in either HO (1:87) or N scale (1:160.)  While there are plenty of O-scale modelers, too, the smaller scales let you actually build something which is operationally significant in the space most have available for a home layout.  The old-time Lionels I had had when I was much younger are 1:48 scale.  While they would run on very tight curves, they look a lot better if you use much larger curves, but that means more space.

I'm taking it that trucks are going to be the main hobby and that trains may be a thought that came later.  As others have said, O scale is the closest and many folks use 1/50 vehicles on their O scale layouts.  Unfortunately, a quick search of the Walthers site didn't turn up either concrete plant or a quarry even though both are available in smaller scales.  It appears that industrial buildings are somewhat limited in that scale.  You could kitbash (using an existing kit and modifying it) or scratchbuild the strructures you want, there are plenty of O scale building materials from several companines that could be used.  Grab some pictures or plans (if you can find them) of the buildings you want, scale them out, and start building.

 Good luck

As has been mentioned, 1/48th scale Lionel would be pretty close to what you are inquiring about, but to make any significant sized layout you are going to need a fair amount of space to make it look reasonable.

Good luck and if you need further help come on back.

FYI, there is a wealth of information you can access by typing in "O gauge"  and/or "1/48th scale" in the "SEARCH COMMUNITY" box down the right hand side of this page.
