beginner tips/info

Where can I get some basic information on laying out and mounting track? I have done so and am having numerous problems with engines and cars derailing and it seems like an endless process of trial and error to fix each issue.

Look for any of the How To model railroad books from Kalmbach Publishing (the Model Railroader magazine people). Your local hobby shop should have several to choose from, or you can try to order one of them online. They have general info books on track laying, scenery & structure details or electronics, as well as scale specific books that show how to build a layout from start to finish.
Good luck.

Before the book store opens, try the home page you are on. Trains.com At the top of page, click on model trains, scroll down to model trains, assuming HO, click on HO, then scroll down to modeling reference and click on track plans. This home page has many tips, but you have to search them out.
