One box in particular, though some of the display boxes might also fall into this. I have a Spectrum George Washington set, came in a beautiful blick matte box, with the GW portrait, the C&O FOr Progress Logo, and the Spectrum stuff all done in an inset Gold. (Much like the typical Spectrum, but not so glossy and up a notch)

Its also big enough to play football on it
I could put the entire HO GW coach fleet in the flippin' thing
It's HUGE.
I really hate t get rid of it, but it's too bulky to store easily with the rest of the train, and to much of a space waster to carry the GW in it, especially now that I'm adding a few cars, when a Dell Pizzabox style software box will do al I need. So, what to do with the fancier boxes?

List on Ebay - there must be someone out there who collects that sort of thing.

That is what storage units are for. Fortunately, I was able to move all my stuff out of a rented storage unit and into one that I purchased.
Perhaps there is a local model railroad museum that would like it.
No matter what you have thats worth anything model railroad related or not is always worth more if you have the box. If you think I'm kidding go to an O scale train show some day and see what those Lionel collectors will pay for a box. I was standing next to a guy who had a smile on is face from ear to ear while he was shelling out $75 for a pair of EMPTY Linoel pre war boxes
Gotta agree 110% wit Allegheny2-6-6-6 on this one.
I've been looking for a set of the Tenshodo crown box's for my GN.R2 2-8-8-2 for better than 20 yrs with no luck but if they ever came up available.....ho'yeah $75.... wouldn't even think twice about shelling it out.
Hang on to that box you will diminish the value of the set by at least 1/3 if not more.
with it's size, around 3ft square, I would put it on the wall for decoration, even if it were just the lid.
