Nothing much this week for me because I am in Orlando Fl. Since it was my birthday recently, I got a gift from a friend here. This was taken in Savannah Georgia, where they got it from a Museum. I believe it may prove instrumental in designing my next yard.

Hi folks.  Really, really nice work shown here this weekend.  I just returned from another long trip to Asia, so no layout pics from me.  But while I was over there I needed to get my hands on some cheap, non-counterfeit, 3D drafting software.  I found Google Sketchup 7 for free online, and after using it on my project fiddled around with it just for kicks.  Here's a quick rendition of a boxcar.  With a bit of practise, you can make almost anything with Sketchup, and of course, you can orbit around the model and see it from any angle you choose.  It seems to me that for certain projects, being able to look at a model this way could be very helpful, whether it's to judge clearances, esthetics, whatever.  Anyway, thought I'd share it with you if anybody has the need.  Cheers.

         Great pics guys, especially the cab forward. Here's my entry. It's an SPMW tool car that I found a picture of when surfing the net awhile back with the picture description depicting the train heading to the Colton yard in California. How it got sent there from the Englewood yard in Houston is anyone's guess.     

           Anyway, I thought it was a cool looking car so I took an IHC smooth side passenger car and turned it into the tool car. I had to cut 8 ft. off of each end of the orginal pullman standard and then removed sections of the body and then wrapped the frame with a sheet of .005 styrene to cover the original doors and windows. I then used a hobby knife and cut out the different portals that I saw from the  picture as close to scale as I could get it. With some sanding , painting, a few strips of styrene here and there, and grab iron installation, got it finish Thursday night. It took me two weeks of evening work to complete the model.

Here's my my picture of the day. 

I've been on a hiatist for the last year but I'm back. Been hard at work converting to DCC and its been a chore for me.  This one will get a blast of weathering in the coming months.  I'm thrilled with the sound and the more realistic motion that I have now.

Some days all goes well until a few minutes before quiting time as the minor derailment shows.

This B&M boxcar derail on the last switch move of the day.

Upper Management decided to wait till Monday to rerail the car since OT would be involved.

This crew doesn't usually work Saturdays but,the distribution center was running behind unloading cars.

Another surprise was this C&O RS1..This unit belongs to a local chapter of NRHS..C&HV leases this unit on special occasions but,not for regular train service..Don't know the full story.

Well, I finally got some more work done this afternoon. This included road construction and adding details to the loading dock. Too bad the contractor knocked down 3 links of the chain link fence, two steps forward and one back.

I don't know what to say. Like every other week, I am STUNNED at the quality of work here. Some of it is by far better than some stuff I've seen in MR.

Over the weekend, I got to painting my SW1500. It is and Athearn Blue Box that I bought for BN and am painting for my railroad.  The colors are CR blue and BN green. The entire thing is brush painted and the paint is not mixed where it's not supposed to be. That really surprises me, considering I did absolutely zero masking. My trick? A very small brush.

I still need to get the decals (that'll be a while, because I need to custom order them, since I can't print in white) and paint and attach the remaining handrails, but it's a start.
