Bowser big boy a labor of love
Posted by 0-6-0 on Monday, January 25, 2010 2:11 PM

Hello I'm working on Bowser big boy with super detail kit that my dad stared awhile back. He has had enough of it and now it's my turn. He did not get to far with it but he did open all the pack's of parts and put them in a case with a spot for each of them. But he did not mark them so I been have a tough time building this monster. What I would like to ask if anyone has built one could you post close up photo of the front end from the front or side. I can not seem to get all that stuff to set right. I did look at the Bowser site but can't see the photo real good. Any info would be great Thanks Frank

Bowser didn't usually mark the parts or package them by part number. If you don't have the instructions that came with the kit, Bowser has part of them on the site:

The diagram shows part placement pretty clear. They also have the full 14 page instruction manual:

I've never done the Big Boy, but I've put several Bowser kits together, and rarely rely on the photos, the diagrams and exploded drawings show the procedure. Maybe a little clearer explanation of what you mean by "can't get all that stuff to set just right" would help.

Smile, it makes people wonder what you're up to. Chief of Sanitation; Clowntown

Hello I do have the instructions for the kit and I have built two of there kits the k-4 and the 2-10-2 . The trouble I am having is with the front platform it looks like it should have screws to hold it in place but there are no holes or screws. I am sure Iam overlooking something. Here are some photos of it.

I don't have the Big Boy, but I do have the Challenger. On mine, the front pilot only has tabs and glue holding it together. From what I can tell, you're putting it together right. Although the pilots for the Big Boy and Challenger are very highly detailed, they're designed a little bit poorly. You'll have to do some filing and whatever else is necessary if you want it to fit together exactly like you want.

A few years back I was going to order one of those and spoke to the owner of the company himself. He asked me have you ever built anything like this before, I told him no I hadn't he said well this ain't the one you want to learn on. Start off with something simpler Never did buy one. Nice job you must have a lot of paients

Just my 2 cents worth, I spent the rest on trains. If you choked a Smurf what color would he turn?

Hello Darth I am surprised you don't have one yet. After all the work you posted here this kit would be a walk in the park for you. I cant take all the credit for it. My dad did all the prep work and paint and some brass work. I did all the drilling and drive-train and now I trying to finish it. I lost my patients 6 months ago it is determination now Big Smile Well it looks like I'll work with it some more and see if I can get it to stay. Thanks for the help Frank
