I'm reposting this question from the Trains forum. However, it might make a good model as well! Here's another picture from the Hartwell line in Greorgia. BLT 5-40 and then SAV 4-65, it is an old car. It is now used to store fuel for the shortline's locomotives. You can see the pump that has been modified to run off compressed air in the first picture.




I was wondering if any of you could tell me what kind of car this is? One of the employes was mentioning that their was some debate in an old model railroad magazine as to whether or not this class even existed. Do any of you have any details as to what the debate was?

That's an oldie!! Note the rivets. I wish I knew more about that kind of tanker, because it is a very common car in 3 rail O. Lionel made so many of these, in one, two, and three dome versions. I suspect that over the years tank car designs have changed for safety reasons, and all but a few of this type have been scrapped. The ones that remain probably can't be filled with anything hazardous. I'm surprised that it can be used for fuel, but I guess as long as it doesn't travel or leak, it's OK.
