One of the main reasons I got out of Sn3 and On3 scales was because all that was (and still is) available were extremely expensive locomotives. I jumped into On30 when Bachmann introduced its line of very affordable, high quality locos and never regretted it.

Some of it can get INCREDIBLY pricey, some of it stays the same, and others just make collectors go HAH! when you offer them for sale (though I never have, I'm too full of squirrel-blood). if it answers your question, somewhat, last year I payed about eight times worth what I bought an Akane Missabe Yellowstone for in 1964. A duplicate was available at a hobby shop, I bit, and now I have two of my favorite locomotives. I look at the second and think, 'Did I really want to pay what I just did for you?' then turned up the power-pack and watched it crawl out of the yards with everything except the garage door. Was it worth it? Heck, yes! Everything's relative.

Come on, fellas! Instead of asking "Who's got the most expensive engine?", why not rather pose the following question:

What's the best deal you've ever made purchasing an engine? Where and how?

The former is just fodder for more bragging rights. The latter might help someone who would like to get into the hobby a more economical venue to do so. Let's come up with more constructive posts and try helping one another out for a change! [V]

I bought a bachmann Spectrum doodlebug for $50. GP7 was $40

Best value I've had has to be either a Bachmann Dash 8-40CW for £30 from my LHS (list was about £60, the LHS had found a batch at clearance), or the E R Models FP7 and Sharknose I've bought recently (waiting for the Shark to arrive at the moment - should be here tomorrow or the day after). Both of these cost £30 - list was £80. If anyone's looking to buy one of these smooth-running beauties I found them on www.ehattons.com - they will ship to the US though I don't know how much it would cost!

Only snag with these locos is that I did have to swap the horn-hook couplers for Kadee #34s, though it's an easy conversion - Kadee has a very good set of instructions on their website. I also had a bit of trouble with "running aground" on Kadee magnets, though this would be avoided by fitting under-track magnets. I solved the problem by lightly filing the truck baseplate to increase the clearance. The results are well worth the effort though!

And, not me either. We're building our fleet of N Scale Class A Climax wannabes out of used Life-like SW9's (if we can find them) and old boilers and parts from old, dead switch engines. (Still need likely candidates, check your rip track and out behind your engine shop.) The Muddy Creek RR isn't one to spend hard-earned cash as long as we can bash old crap together and pull empties up the mountain and let gravity bring 'em down.

We've been thinking of using .22 cartridges for boilers, so if anyone is thinking of breaking in to our shops, that's where to find our expensive brass collection.

Sheesh, My most expensive was $60, discounted at a train show, and I sweated when I spent that! Thats considered Peanuts in large scale where a new loco often starts at $150 and avearge between $200-500, with some offerings up to $4500.

Only once did I spend $4500 on an engine, and that one had a Ford Econoline attached to it. I'll stick to peanuts.

I'd be dead if I spent anywhere near that kind of money for A train. I don't even think about it. My wife is of Irish and indian heritage. Cherokee and Southern Cheyanne[sp].No way do I wi***o get her mad. Once was a good lesson.

i still have the very first engine i got when i was six.....from a christmas past....i remember my brother built a 4x8 layout before xmas and i was under the impression that it was his until i opened up a set xmas morning and dad said to try it out on "your" new layout...it was a green BN F7...that engine still runs 26 years later...it may have cost only about three bucks new....but to me it's the most expensive one i got....
