Athearn SD60M sound questions
Posted by Tjsingle on Friday, October 16, 2009 12:45 PM
Hey guys, I am looking for a new locomotive for my layout, which is a 4x8 with a 7 ft extension, with 22 radius curves. I am thinking about the newist release conrail sd60ms not the sd60i's with MRC sound. Does this unit was the new tsuami sound, it sayd it does, but i emailed athearn and no response. http://www.athearn.com/Products/Default.aspx?ProdID=ATHG67378 I have a conrail sd70mac genesis, when i came out a long time ago, but its a little beat, the board blew out twice when i had DC, replace the ditch lights with the undecorated color because i could not find the conrail blue ones. It looks alright on my trackage but overhangs a little bit on the track. It was ethier a six axle, a smaller sd40-2 size six axle, or a four axle GP, or SW1500. But now i'm thinking that maybe a SW1500 would look better on a branch line that hauls short cuts of coal, and has some smaller industries.

According to the link you yourself provided, the unit does include a Tsunami sound decoder:

Now equipped with a SoundTraxx Tsunami Digital Sound Decoder

I have a couple of the UP models actually, and they sound great. Most of my current layout is 28-30" radius, and the overhang is fairly minor. I do have one section of 24" though, and the overhang is quite significant. Operating on my 24" seems like a stretch for these big engines. I'd imagine that it would look even worse on 22", and I'm not sure how reliable the engine would operate on 22".

If you're looking for sound in a smaller frame, I also recently purchased one of the MP-15s from Athearn, again with the Tsunami. The engine looks, runs and sounds great. It has made all the neighbors around the industrial where it operates quite angry.
