I did not know Atlas could sell Athearn products.
Bruce
I recieved one of those as well..I think its bogus.
Why would Atlas be selling Athearn Blue Box SW1500s?

Thanks for supporting my suspicions..The Atlas forum is slow in responding as well..Could be down from being hacked.

Exactly. Sends up a big RED flag for me.

Time...It marches on...without ever turning around to see if anyone is even keeping in step.
I'm not so sure... There are N scale freight sets by Atlas listed as well. Also, it was brought up on another forum that manufacturers often have products from the competition.

Well, if it's a hack, it's a pretty good one. If you go to the Atlas on-line store and click on promotional items, those Athearns show up. And if you type Athearn in the search box, they still show up.
I wonder if they have motors in them.
the add has a customer servise number (800) at top, call it or compare to old atlas paperwork to see if it jives ........you never know ...J.W.
its the real deal according to the two c/s people ,it has has something to do with an old deal they bhad with athern and they just turned up in the wherehouse.....to even the serprise of atlas c/s ....if its a good deal better call.......J.W.
Dang! I just spent more than that to rebuild my SW chassis!
I'll be dang..It is the real McCoy..
That email had me scratching my melon as well. I wonder what kind of arrangement they hey had with Athearn, and when.
Darn nice price, tho.

The Atlas server is always slow. Drives me nuts waiting for the images in their email newsletters to download.

I thought it was a good offer and so I went right out and ordered 25 of 'em. This might explain why someone calling themselves Atlas Marketing has been trying all morning to charge $250,000.00 to my credit cards.

This is not surprising at all. Manufacturers often buy their competitions products for inspection, testing, comparison, etc.
Being legit businesses, they often have accounts with wholesale outlets or even with their competitors directly.
Example - I purchased a number of Bachmann Spectrum 2-6-6-2's a few years ago, on Ebay. Guess who the Ebay seller was? Soundtraxx. They had plans to install sound decoders and resell them, something they where doing at the time with several different locos. They changed their mind and sold a BIG stack of these locos on Ebay, really cheap. I paid about $75 ea for the ones I got.
Back in the day, before they where all one company, Athearn and MDC used to do tooling and machine work back and forth for each other. Cooperation between manufacturers in this hobby is nothing new, but it seems to be less now than before.
Today some manufacturers have really isolated themselves, but for many it is more of a club than a competition. If you notice, before they where one company, there was very little overlap in product between Athearn and MDC. To this day Bachmann still has a policy of avoiding/minimising the number of products that are directly the same as thier competitors.
Fact is Atlas has every legal right to sell those Athearn locos just like anyone else.
I don't think there is anything "fishy" about it at all.

It's just that news like this has the potential to catch one off guard as it is out of the ordinary these days, too bad I can't use any.

Absolutely..It was out of the clear blue skies and totally unexpected.
It's nice to know that even a well-respected manufacturer like Atlas accumulates so much junk that stuff gets buried and forgotten. Let's hope they keep up the spring cleaning!

Now that I know that this is a legit thing I've got a beginner in MRR going to need some of those Lokes!!

I just started my blog site...more stuff to come...

OK, I need another project like the Eskimos need ice, but... I model the New Haven, which had SW1200 switchers with Flexcoil trucks. Any of you guys have any idea how easy it would be to fit an SW1200 shell onto this mechanism? TIA Ken
nice deal, prolly clearing out the discovered inventory. But I have enough SW's for me so I'm out, I usually buy for the theme I do, and I don't need much anymore. Just working building the layout, doing construction planning etc.
OK, for $19,99, and free shipping if you buy at least 3, has anyone bought any yet? How can you beat $19.99? Forget the fact you don't model those 3 RR's, maybe they are on loan to your RR, leased?
just ordered a bn one. couldnt pass up the deal 20 bucks is a great price for the blue box locomotives. i had to look twice when i got the email too.
I ordered one too - will have to pay postage to Canada, but it's still a deal. If it's like an Athearn SW1500 switcher that I got about 5 years ago, then it will have only one light, have one of the power pickups through the frame, and have some metal wheels that attract rail dirt like crazy. I replaced the wheels with North West Shortline nickel-silver wheels and had to hardwire a decoder [there is no 8-pin plug]. The loco runs fine except that I shorted out and fried the decoder when cleaning the wheels with one of those Atlas wire things [avoid using this now]. So there are a few add-on costs to get it onto the roster.

Ken, if you just want flexicoil trucks, you can buy the sideframes from Horizon Hobby. That's part no. ATH39020. Just pop the type A's off and push the flexi's on. The SW1500 frame will make the SW1200 sit too high and the fuel tank is different.

Interesting that the category on the Atlas website is "Promotional Items"?? Unfortunately the Atlas Forum is down right now apparently, so can't check there, but it appears legit on the website.
Thanks, Jim. I thought the frame on the 1500 was too high. The NHRHTA offered an Athern to NH conversion kit, if any are available I may go that route. Ken

Thanks for the heads up that these units don't have Flexicoils.I've got to get a BN one.
I just clicked on to thier website and ther was nothing about Athearn SW 1500s. I guess they are alll gone.
