Wobbling Athearn GP-38-2
Posted by anthonykaz on Wednesday, July 1, 2009 7:46 PM
I purchased a new RTR GP-38-2. While running, the motor makes some noise and the locomotive wobbles down the tracks. To the left, then to the center. I have looked into the gear housing and have found nothing, all of the bearings are present, and I have no clue as to what the problem is. this happened after Ii soldered a decoder pin into the locomotive. It wobbles with and without the shell. What do you think?

Wobbling is generally caused by out of round wheels or wheels that are not straight on the axle.

Best I can do.

Your loco has one or more wheelsets that aren't centered properly for some reason. You can send the loco back to Athearn for repair or you can check the LHS for replacement wheelsets. A pack with enough wheelsets to do several locos costs around $12.

I had a used BB SW7 that did that..Since I couldn't find a problem I took the engine completely apart and reassemble it ..That seem to take care of the problem.

If the wobble started after doing some soldering, I'd surely check every wheel for a blob of stray solder stuck to the tread.
