This one may be larger.  The coal handling loop in Monroe, Mich, for the Detroit Edison Power Company dumps 250, 100ton hoppers, of coal daily at this facility.  The mechanical puller and the rotary dumper will pull and dump a 100 car train. The cars are separated from the engines after being dropped in the dumping position and pulled thru with a giant ***-a-long.  That's approx 25,000 tons/day on an annual usage basis.

If you look at the 'satellite' view, you will see loaded hopper cars going in the north side of the car dumper and empties coming out of the south side.  A second train is waiting on the outside track.  It will pull the loads in, disconnect, and pick up the empties for removal.

Graffen, what is it? So it is just outside Stockholm, but what is it used for?

How does the one-half by three mile oval at Herlong, California at the Sierra Army Depot compare?

And then there's the AAR's Technology Test Center near Pueblo, Colorado and this description of the RTT (Railroad Test Track):

Railroad Test Track - RTT

A 13.5-mile loop with four 50-minute curves and a single 1 degree, 15 minute reverse curve, allows maximum speeds of 165 mph. All curves have 6-inches of super elevation. Track structure includes welded 136-pound per-yard rail, new concrete ties and treated hardwood ties with elastic fasteners. The track loop is also equipped with a rail break detection and switch indication system.  The RTT's catenary system can deliver a single-phase, 60 Hz alternating current at 12.5, 25, or 50 kV, in a single or dual voltage condition. The contact wire height is currently set at a 22 feet, 6 inch height. It is also possible to energize the system with DC power.

The RTT is the site of frequent high-speed stability and endurance tests for electric powered cars and locomotives. Total performance evaluations of North East Corridor locomotives are carried out on the RTT. Connected to the RTT and used for turning trains, is a Balloon Loop, which has a 7-degree, 30-minute curve with 4.5 inches super elevation, and a 5-degree reverse curve with 3.5 inches of super elevation. This loop is the site of the rail defect gauntlet track used for rail defect detection research.

I'll see that 13.5 mile loop and raise it.

How about 55.2 kilometers, with 28 stations and ten car EMU trains on 5 minute headway in both directions?  Granted, it's not a perfect oval (more like a deflated football,) but the trains DO go 'round and 'round, one lap per hour or so.  It's Tokyo's YamanoTe line, and it's the big shoelace that ties all of the mainline and private railway stations together.

Not to say that it can get crowded at rush hour, but there used to be extra workers on the platforms to cram people into the cars so the sliding doors could close.

Trains magazine did a spread recently with an odd shaped loop for grain trains.

Roundy-round-round modelers like myself take heart!Wink

There ARE prototypes for ovals/loops/circles/deflated football layouts!Smile,Wink, & Grin

Now...to install those industries along my ovals.....Whistling
