I have a couple of "inexpensive" HO cars that have markings I would like to use. They have Talgo trucks similar to the Life Like Bettendorf ones at the lower left on pg 269 of the 2008 Walthers Catalog or pg 43 of the December flyer. These have sort of a split mushroom head (for want of a better description) that snaps into the hole in the body. I haven't been able to find a pin or somesuch to hold a new truck in place.
Any suggestions on how to attach the replacement trucks would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Is there something wrong with the trucks other than the talgo couplers? If they roll good why not just clip the couplers and body mount KaDees or what ever your choice of coupler is?
I stopped swaping out the trucks unless of course they were the wrong type.I bought a REBOXX Exxact Socket Tool (Micro Mark has one too) and just use that to clean up the axle cones on the trucks .I don't replace the wheels either unless they are junk.
The REBOXX tool has paid for itself after only ten cars,if you want to switch to new metal wheels the tool will set your cheapie trucks up just fine.
I have quite a fleet of the origonal LifeLike Thrall all door boxcars that I have done this to and they roll as well if not better than the KaDee or KATO trucks.
Body mounting the couplers is of course an easy swap.
Catt,
Had thought of cutting off the offending end and using the truck, just was interested in how it worked, sounds like it did. Do have a truck tuner so will use that on the stock truck and add metal wheel sets, yes the #5's in coupler box are awaiting installation.
RT Poteet,
Don't know what happened to your answer, but it got emailed to me. Had thought of plug and redrill (arrrgh), but putting the screw in the "wet" epoxy, then unscrewing sounds much easier.
Thank you both,
I converted the tender of an old Bachmann READING 2-8-0 to a tender for my Tichy steam crane. It had that kind of truck. Since it was some type of a high speed truck and I didn't think that looked good on a tender that would probebly never move very fast, I changed them out. I just filled the holes with Squadron white putty let them set for a couple days, marked the centers and carefully drilled out a new hole for the standard truck. Used 2-56 self tapping screws and mounted the new trucks. Works fine.
