I've not yet seen a live steam Hornby loco "in the metal", but the ones I saw on a CD-ROM handed out by Continental Modeller magazine last year were hauling 5 or more passenger cars without any trouble - would very much like to try one on my 9-car British express set (Bachmann MK1s and Thompsons). I don't think haulage ability is going to be a problem, so long as you keep loads within scale lengths - it shouldn't have trouble with a typical 10-car British express.

I hear that the technology behind it has been licensed to a US manufacturer, so there could be a live steam US loco soon.

In response to those talking about the fact that it isn't DCC compatible, I agree that this is a problem. I was dismayed to find that Hornby had had to produce a completely new power and control system for it. Would still consider buying one if I could afford it though!
